Understanding traffic bottlenecks of long freeway tunnels based on a novel location-dependent lighting-related car-following model

Shanchuan Yu et al.

Summary: To understand the formation of lighting-related traffic bottlenecks in the daytime, a driver model was developed that incorporates location-dependent lighting-related desired speed. The model describes the impact of location-heterogeneous lighting conditions on driver's car-following behavior in the tunnels. The results show that adaptive tunnel lighting and sunscreens at tunnel portals can improve traffic conditions in strong daylight.

Comparative study on drivers' eye movement characteristics and psycho-physiological reactions at tunnel entrances in plain and high-altitude areas: A pilot study

Guanfeng Yan et al.

Summary: The safety of drivers when driving through road tunnel entrances is a concern for researchers. This study explored the eye movement characteristics and psycho-physiological reactions of drivers at tunnel entrances in plain and high-altitude areas. The results showed that the pupil size of drivers is mainly related to ambient illuminance, and the change in illuminance at high-altitude tunnel entrances is greater. Drivers in high-altitude areas pay more attention to their surroundings and inside the tunnel focus on the central sight area. Lower oxygen content and decreased illumination hinder the information-processing ability of drivers.

Safety evaluation of visual load at entrance and exit of extra-long expressway tunnel based on optimized support vector regression

Ting Shang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the visual load characteristics of drivers at the entrance and exit of extra-long tunnels on mountainous expressways. The results show that drivers experience high psychological tension at the entrance and exit, while the approach section is mainly influenced by environmental illumination. Velocity has a greater impact on the visual load of drivers.

Modeling a Car-Following Model with Comprehensive Safety Field in Freeway Tunnels

Zheng Chen et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a risk-based comprehensive car-following model to describe car-following behavior in tunnels. The model considers the influence of speed limit signs, leading vehicles, and lighting conditions on driving risks, and introduces comprehensive safety field and risk margin as indicators for evaluating driving behavior and determining driving strategies.

Tunnel Traffic Evolution during Capacity Drop Based on High-Resolution Vehicle Trajectory Data

Lu Yang et al.

Summary: This study used empirical vehicle trajectory data to explore the traffic characteristics during capacity drop at a tunnel bottleneck section. The results showed that capacity drop is a dynamic process from free flow to congested flow, with distinct differences in traffic operation and driving characteristics between the two states. The study also estimated the influence of lane-changing behavior on capacity drop.

Freeway tunnel effect of travel time based-on a double lane traffic model

Yongliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper explores the impact of speed limit in freeway tunnels on car driving behaviors. A double lane traffic model is proposed to investigate the tunnel effect on travel time. The results indicate that while the tunnel significantly affects traffic flow patterns, its impact on travel time is minimal. On/off ramp flows play a crucial role in shaping traffic patterns.

Characteristics of driver fatigue and fatigue-relieving effect of special light belt in extra-long highway tunnel: A real-road driving study

Pengcheng Qin et al.

Summary: Real-road driving tests were conducted in an extra-long highway tunnel to study driver fatigue, showing that fatigue accumulated slowly in the first 5 minutes, rapidly after the sixth minute, and slowed down at the end due to outside light. A special light belt was found effective in relieving driver fatigue, with significant differences observed in fatigue indicators between driving conditions with and without the light belt.

Shoushuo Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated drivers' visual characteristics in small-radius optically long tunnels on rural roads. The research focused on fixation and saccade, and found that smaller tunnel radius led to more focused gaze points on inside of curves, longer fixation duration, and lower safety with higher psychological pressure.
