Metal Composition and Source Identification of PM2.5 and PM10 at a Suburban Site in Pathum Thani, Thailand

Sasikarn Nuchdang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the concentrations, characteristics, and sources of PM2.5 and PM10 in a suburban area in Pathum Thani, Thailand. The sampling period lasted from February 18, 2021, to September 14, 2021. The results showed that PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 0.39 μg/m³ to 174.26 μg/m³, and PM10 concentrations ranged from 12.75 μg/m³ to 242.02 μg/m³. The average PM2.5 concentration in the wet season exceeded the national ambient air quality standards. Particle-induced X-ray emission was used for elemental analysis, and the main elements found in both PM2.5 and PM10 exhibited higher concentrations in the summer season. Source identification was conducted using qualitative correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis (CA), with consistent results across all three procedures. PCA identified four and three sources for PM2.5 and PM10, respectively, including soil dust, biomass burning, road dust, and industrial emissions.

Characterization of nebulization generated aerosol particles dispersion and deposition by total reflection X-ray fluorescence

Davide Ciniglia et al.

Summary: To prevent air pollution and achieve air quality regulations, developing analytical techniques for determining metal concentrations in aerosol particles is crucial. Total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (TXRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) are emerging as complementary techniques for elemental analysis. This study proposes a novel methodology using TXRF to characterize nebulized aerosol particles dispersion and deposition, aiming to assess their potential use as calibration samples for LIBS and TXRF analysis.

An inter-laboratory comparison of elemental loadings of PM2.5 samples using energy-dispersive XRF and magnetic-sector ICP-MS

Chinmoy Sarkar et al.

Summary: We conducted an inter-laboratory study comparing elemental loadings of atmospheric particulate matter samples using XRF and SF-ICP-MS techniques. Both techniques showed strong correlations for most elements, except for a few with weak correlations. SF-ICP-MS had better detection limits than XRF for certain elements. However, further comparisons on real-world samples and the need for shared reference materials are necessary to determine the accuracy of these techniques.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the air quality in the city of Zaragoza, Spain, by characterizing atmospheric particulate matter (PM10) during winter and spring. The results revealed the presence of both natural and anthropogenic particles, with the latter mainly formed by black carbon from fossil fuel combustion emissions. Additionally, chemical analysis showed the presence of three types of microplastics in the city's air. These findings are of special interest for future air quality policies aiming to reduce air pollution in cities.

Assessment of suspended particulate matter and heavy metal analysis during Diwali festival at Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India

Pallavi Pradeep Khobragade et al.

Summary: Celebrating Diwali in India involves a lot of firecracker bursting, which significantly contributes to air pollution by increasing the concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and heavy metals. This study found that SPM concentrations were about two times higher during Diwali compared to the pre-Diwali period, and heavy metal analysis revealed an increase in iron, zinc, lead, manganese, and nickel concentrations post-Diwali. Local sources such as firecracker burning and industrial activities were identified as the main pollution sources.

X-ray fluorescence analysis of air particulate matter generated at a welding site

M. Ghosh et al.

Summary: The air particulate matter generated during welding operations poses a major health risk to welders as they can cause respiratory diseases. This study aimed to analyze the elemental composition of the air particulate matter at a welding site using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF). The results showed that the major contributors to the particulate matter were aluminum, silicon, calcium, and iron. The composition of the particulate matter was influenced by the welding material and adjacent construction activities. The study demonstrated the fast and non-destructive analysis capability of EDXRF and TXRF for air particulate samples.

On the techniques and standards of particulate matter sampling

Prashant Patel et al.

Summary: This review paper focuses on the compliance of air quality standards in different countries and discusses the sampling and analysis techniques in the context of PM samplers' design mentioned in specific PM measuring standards. The review finds that most countries have similar practices in measuring PM2.5, except for the European Union which has different design and parameters. For PM10 measurement, the sampler designs vary between the EU, India, and the US EPA standards. The review also identifies important issues that are not addressed in the current standards. The discussions and findings of this review can be useful for revising air quality standards and filling research gaps in this field.

Critical review on the development of analytical techniques for the elemental analysis of airborne particulate matter

Monika Ogrizek et al.

Summary: Particulate matter (PM) is the major threat to our health among all environmental pollutants, and its regular monitoring is required. To determine the concentrations of toxic metals and other elements in PM, microwave digestion inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MW/ICPMS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques are commonly used. This review paper critically assesses these two techniques as well as three others for element determination in PM deposited on filter media, and identifies XRF and LA-ICPMS as two promising surface techniques for the analysis of PM deposits.
