Changes in toxicity and adsorbable organic bromine concentrations in ozonated reclaimed water irradiated with sunlight

De-Xiu Wu et al.

Summary: Irradiation with sunlight can effectively degrade adsorbable organic bromine (AOBr) and decrease the toxicity of ozonated reclaimed water. UV light is predominantly responsible for the degradation of AOBr and the decrease in toxicity.

Oxygen doping of cobalt-single-atom coordination enhances peroxymonosulfate activation and high-valent cobalt-oxo species formation

Qian-Yuan Wu et al.

Summary: A cobalt-single-atom catalyst with N/O dual coordination was synthesized by O-doping engineering and showed efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for water purification. The O-doped catalyst (Co-OCN) achieved a pollutant degradation kinetic constant 4.9 times higher than that of the catalyst without O-doping (Co-CN) and exhibited a dominant oxidation of pollutants through Co(IV)=O formation. The Co-OCN catalyst on carbon felt achieved continuous and efficient removal of micropollutants.

UV/Chlorine Process: An Efficient Advanced Oxidation Process with Multiple Radicals and Functions in Water Treatment

Kaiheng Guo et al.

Summary: Due to the worsened global water quality, the presence of chemical and microbial contaminants in water raises serious concerns for human health. Therefore, it is crucial to identify and develop effective and environmentally friendly water treatment technologies to obtain clean water. This article focuses on the radical chemistry of UV/chlorine, an emerging advanced oxidation process (AOP), and its role in the abatement of contaminants.

Removal of disinfection byproducts and toxicity of chlorinated water by post-treatments of ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet/peroxymonosulfate

Wen-Cheng Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and toxicity of chlorinated water using post-treatments of UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) and UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS). The results showed that adding H2O2 or PMS improved the removal of nitrogenous DBPs and total organic chlorine (TOCl) compared to UV alone. However, the removal efficiency was reduced in the presence of bromide. UV/H2O2 was more effective in removing cytotoxicity and genotoxicity than UV/PMS. In the UV/PMS process, SO4'- was more efficient in removing toxicity than 'OH.

Removal of methylisothiazolinone biocide from wastewater by VUV/UV advanced oxidation process: Kinetics, mechanisms and toxicity

Nan Huang et al.

Summary: Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is efficiently degraded by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)/ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, with the presence of .center dot & nbsp;OH as the main oxidant. The degradation efficiency of MIT under VUV/UV irradiation is higher than under UV irradiation, and is influenced by solution pH and the concentration of CO32- /HCO3-. The study also identified the main degradation mechanisms of MIT as sulfur atom oxidation and hydroxyl addition, with VUV/UV degradation being an effective method to remove MIT toxicity.

Quantitative assessment of the variability in chemical profiles from source apportionment analysis of PM10 and PM2.5 at different sites within a large metropolitan area

M. Manousakas et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the differences in chemical profiles of major anthropogenic and natural PM sources in two areas with varying levels of urbanization and traffic density in the same urban agglomeration. Statistical analysis tools including Pearson correlation and Standardized Identity Distance were used to quantify the similarity between source profiles. The study found high correlation in some sources (Mineral Dust, Biomass Burning, Sea Salt, Sulfates, Heavy Oil Combustion) but different results for Biomass Burning, highlighting the importance of using multiple tools for a thorough evaluation of source profile similarity.

Impacts of pre-oxidation on the formation of disinfection byproducts from algal organic matter in subsequent chlor(am)ination: A review

Feilong Dong et al.

Summary: This article reviews the impact of pre-oxidation on the formation of DBPs during chlor(am)ination, discussing the application of various pre-oxidation technologies and their effects on algal cells and AOM. Pre-oxidation can reduce the stability of algal cells, promote aggregation, and degrade AOM to reduce the potential for DBP formation during subsequent chlor(am)ination. The article also evaluates the applicability of different pre-oxidation processes and identifies future research needs.

Reduction of cytotoxicity and DNA double-strand break effects of wastewater by ferrate(VI): Roles of oxidation and coagulation

Qian-Yuan Wu et al.

Summary: Ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) effectively reduces the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of secondary effluents by oxidizing and coagulating organic matter and heavy metals, alleviating oxidative stress in cells. The Fe(VI) treatment showed better performance in removing organic matter, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity compared to ferric chloride, highlighting its potential in advanced wastewater treatment processes.

From Pinocytosis to Methuosis-Fluid Consumption as a Risk Factor for Cell Death

Markus Ritter et al.

Summary: The volumes of cells and their organelles are regulated by osmoregulatory processes. Cells respond to osmotic gradients by adjusting their volume, while cell death pathways can lead to either a decrease or increase in cell volume. Dysfunction in pinocytosis and macropinocytosis can result in cell swelling and fluid accumulation, ultimately leading to cell death.
