No complementarity no gain-Net diversity effects on tree productivity occur once complementarity emerges during early stand development

Jon Urgoiti et al.

Summary: Although there are divergent opinions on the nature and strength of the positive effects of tree diversity on forest productivity, this study shows that these effects progressively increase over time, primarily driven by increases in complementarity. Mixing species with contrasting resource-acquisition strategies and the dominance of deciduous, fast-developing species promote the positive effects of diversity on productivity. Canopy closure and subsequent stem exclusion phase play a key role in promoting niche complementarity in diverse tree communities.

Effect of Colored Shading Nets on the Growth and Water Use Efficiency of Sweet Pepper Grown under Semi-arid Conditions

Osama Mohawesh et al.

Summary: Colored shading nets have been studied in semi-arid crop production systems for their ability to reduce solar radiation and improve plant growth and water use efficiency. This study found that green and black shading nets significantly enhanced the growth and water use efficiency of sweet peppers.

Assessing the effects of nurse shrubs, sink patches and plant water-use strategies for the establishment of late-successional tree seedlings in Mediterranean reclaimed mining hillslopes

Eduardo Vicente et al.

Summary: The use of ecohydrologically suitable microsites, such as sink patches and nurse shrubs, can improve the establishment of late-successional trees in Mediterranean reclaimed landscapes. Sink patches can enhance tree survival and growth, while nurse shrubs are particularly beneficial for drought-tolerant species. Seedling water-use strategy is a critical factor influencing plantation performance.

Tree species mixing can amplify microclimate offsets in young forest plantations

Shengmin Zhang et al.

Summary: Macroclimate warming affects ecosystems globally, but tree canopies can buffer temperature fluctuations. Tree species mixing plays an important role in below-canopy microclimate offsetting. Based on our findings, we recommend planting mixed-species forests to enhance forest resilience to climate change.

Effect of shade and precipitation on germination and seedling establishment of dominant plant species in an Andean arid region, the Bolivian Prepuna

Natalio Roque Marca et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigated the germination and early survival of dominant species in the Bolivian Prepuna region, revealing different responses to shade and irrigation among species. These differences in the regeneration niche may promote coexistence and could be characteristic of other dry Andean regions.

Drivers of seedling establishment success in dryland restoration efforts

Nancy Shackelford et al.

Summary: Restoration of degraded drylands is crucial to mitigate climate change, with seeding of native species playing a critical role. Research shows that around one-third of seeding projects are successful, while 17% fail. Success of seeding establishment is influenced by factors such as seeding rate, seed size, site aridity, taxonomic identity, and species life form.
