Modeling high-Mach-number rarefied crossflows past a flat plate using the maximum-entropy moment method

Stefano Boccelli et al.

Summary: The 10 and 14-moment maximum-entropy methods are used to study high-Mach-number non-reacting crossflows past a flat plate at large degrees of rarefaction. The accuracy of the moment solutions is compared to particle-based kinetic solutions, and both methods show varying degrees of accuracy. The 10-moment method is able to reproduce the shock layer but fails to predict the low-density wake region, while the 14-moment method accurately predicts both regions. At a Knudsen number of 1, the 10-moment method produces unphysical results in both the shock layer and wake, while the 14-moment method shows reduced accuracy in the wake but still provides a reasonable prediction of the shock region.

Hyper2D: A finite-volume solver for hyperbolic equations and non-equilibrium flows

Stefano Boccelli

Summary: Hyper2D is a finite-volume solver for hyperbolic PDEs and non-equilibrium flows. It is quickly adaptable to different needs due to its minimalistic structure. It is used in various research areas, including rarefied hypersonic gas dynamics, relativistic flows, multi-fluid plasma models, and kinetic theory.

14-moment maximum-entropy modeling of collisionless ions for Hall thruster discharges

S. Boccelli et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of the 14-moment maximum-entropy model to ion dynamics in Hall effect thrusters. The accuracy of the model is assessed against different models, and the results show that the maximum-entropy model is robust and accurate, with lower computational cost compared to direct kinetic simulations.

Shock structure in extended thermodynamics with second-order maximum entropy principle closure

Andrea Mentrelli et al.

Summary: An investigation on the features of the shock structure solution of the 13-moment system of extended thermodynamics with a second-order closure based on the maximum entropy principle is presented. The analysis shows that adopting a second-order closure results in a significantly reduced subshock strength and better agreement with results obtained with the kinetic theory approach. Preliminary results for the 14-moment system of a polyatomic gas are also presented.

Summary: The paper utilized data from the 2015 reentry of IXV to analyze post-flight and reconstruct heat flux. In studying the rarefied portion of the atmospheric reentry, DSMC simulations and CFD calculations showed agreement in surface quantities, suggesting ways to improve results.

Higher order hyperbolic quadrature method of moments for solving kinetic equations

Maxim Van Cappellen et al.

Summary: This work aims to solve two fundamental problems encountered when using quadrature based moment methods to solve kinetic equations, namely particle trajectory crossing and particle segregation events. By focusing on one-dimensional free transport of particles and introducing a novel hyperbolic quadrature moment closure, the study successfully addresses these issues and presents a stable and efficient numerical algorithm for solving kinetic equations using QBMM.

An Approximation for the Twenty-One-Moment Maximum-Entropy Model of Rarefied Gas Dynamics

Fabien Giroux et al.

Summary: Moment-closure methods in predicting continuum and moderately rarefied flow offer modeling and numerical advantages, particularly the maximum-entropy family with hyperbolic systems of equations. The 21 moment model within this family can accurately predict viscous flows with heat transfer and improve numerical accuracy. However, the distribution function associated with this model requires an approximation due to its inability to be integrated in closed form.

Shock structure in the 14 moment system of extended thermodynamics with high order closure based on the maximum entropy principle

Andrea Mentrelli

Summary: When using higher order closures, the strength of the subshock in the shock structure is significantly reduced for large Mach numbers compared to first order closure, leading to a better agreement with experimental results in the overall profile of the shock structure solution.
