Diet and environment of Mylodon darwinii based on pollen of a Late-Glacial coprolite from the Mylodon Cave in southern Chile

Summary: This study analyzed the pollen content of a Late-Glacial giant ground sloth coprolite from Mylodon Cave in southern Chile. The findings suggest that Mylodon may have been a selective feeder, as indicated by the presence of large amounts of Fragaria and Azorella pollen in its feces. Additionally, testing of ancient DNA in the sample showed low levels of ancient plant DNA preservation.

Summary: This study compared DNA, pollen, and macrofossil analyses of permafrost-preserved mammal feces, showing that DNA metabarcoding can provide more accurate plant identifications, especially for challenging plant families. By integrating results from different proxies, the study successfully reconstructed the diets and habitats of extant caribou, while also revealing the mixed feeding habits of extinct mammals like horses and steppe bison, as well as the varied diets of mammoths in different habitats.
