Failure mode transition in Opalinus Clay: a hydro-mechanical and microstructural perspective

Lisa Winhausen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the failure mode of Opalinus Clay under different stress conditions. The results show a transition from brittle to ductile deformation with increasing stress, and the deformation localizes in distinct shear bands. The study also reveals less dilation in the shear zones at higher stresses.

Benchmark study of undrained triaxial testing of Opalinus Clay shale: Results and implications for robust testing

Alberto Minardi et al.

Summary: The triaxial testing of argillaceous rocks and shales presents significant challenges due to their low permeability, sensitivity to environment, and lack of international standards. A benchmark study involving three leading service laboratories demonstrated good reproducibility of effective stress paths under similar initial conditions. Testing on Opalinus Clay shale showed that robust triaxial testing results can be achieved for shales when key challenges are addressed.

Experimental Deformation of Opalinus Clay at Elevated Temperature and Pressure Conditions: Mechanical Properties and the Influence of Rock Fabric

Summary: The mechanical behavior of sandy facies of Opalinus Clay was investigated through triaxial tests. Samples displayed different deformation behaviors under various conditions, influenced by factors such as water content, stress state, sample orientation, and mineral composition within the layers.

Micromechanisms leading to shear failure of Opalinus Clay in a triaxial test: a high-resolution BIB-SEM study

Lisa Winhausen et al.

Summary: The microphysics-based study on Opalinus Clay reveals that deformation mechanisms are controlled by both brittle and ductile processes, leading to the formation of networks of deformation bands with widths up to tens of micrometres. The compaction and local dilation effects have a significant impact on permeability, while additional solution-precipitation processes may operate during long-term deformation.

A comparative study on methods for determining the hydraulic properties of a clay shale

Lisa Winhausen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comparative laboratory study of different methods to determine the water permeability of saturated Opalinus Clay, and found the results obtained by different methods differ less than 15 percent. The pore pressure oscillation technique appears to be the most efficient in terms of experimental handling and data density, providing continuous data on permeability and storativity over a user-defined period of time.
