Influence of Clay Mineralogy on Soil Organic Carbon Stabilization under Tropical Climate, India

Abinash Das et al.

Summary: The mechanisms of soil organic carbon (SOC) stabilization, particularly in tropical conditions, have been studied. Clay minerals play a significant role in stabilizing SOC through various mechanisms. Different mineralogy of clay, such as smectite, 2:1 interstratified minerals, illite, and kaolinite, influence soil carbon mineralization and labile carbon fractions. The study showed that specific mineralogy had a positive influence on the sequestration and stabilization of labile carbon in soil.

Iron-rich sand promoted nitrate reduction in a study for testing of lignite based new slow-release fertilisers

Gunaratnam Abhiram et al.

Summary: The N losses and agronomic performances of newly developed slow-releasing fertilisers (SRFs; Epox5 and Poly5) were compared with conventional N fertilisers (urea and DAP) in a climate-controlled lysimeter system. Results showed that the dry matter yield and N losses of SRFs were not significantly different from urea and DAP. However, nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide (N2O) losses were unexpectedly low, indicating a chemical transformation of nitrate. The involvement of iron-rich sand in nitrate reduction under anaerobic conditions was hypothesised.

Association of Organic Carbon With Reactive Iron Oxides Driven by Soil pH at the Global Scale

Chenglong Ye et al.

Summary: Soil pH is the primary factor controlling the abundance of Fe-associated C globally, mainly by influencing the binding of C with Fe minerals. Fe-associated C shows a significant increase when soil pH decreases from 4.2 to 3.5, while the change is small when pH > 4.2.

Formation efficiency of soil organic matter from plant litter is governed by clay mineral type more than plant litter quality

Yuzhi Xu et al.

Summary: The type of clay minerals and the quality of plant litter have important effects on the formation efficiency of soil organic matter. Different clay minerals, such as kaolinite, illite, and vermiculite, have different mechanisms of influence on the decomposition of plant litter and the formation of soil organic matter.

Global stocks and capacity of mineral-associated soil organic carbon

Katerina Georgiou et al.

Summary: This study estimates the stocks and storage capacity of mineral-associated organic carbon globally by analyzing soil profiles. The results show that the current carbon stocks in non-permafrost mineral soils account for 66% to 70% of soil carbon in surface and deeper layers, respectively, but only 42% to 21% of the mineralogical capacity. Agricultural management regions and deeper soil layers exhibit the largest undersaturation of mineral-associated carbon. Soil carbon furthest from its mineralogical capacity is more effective at accruing carbon over years to decades.

Antibiotic adsorption by natural and modified clay minerals as designer adsorbents for wastewater treatment: A comprehensive review

Gill Gillenay Haciosmanoglu et al.

Summary: Increased antibiotic use worldwide has caused concerns due to their health and environmental impacts. This paper reviews the recent progress in using natural and modified clay minerals as efficient and cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of antibiotics from water. The characteristics of clay minerals as adsorbents and the factors affecting the adsorption are explored, along with future trends and strategies to increase their adsorption capacity. The paper also discusses the application of these adsorbents at pilot scale and other related issues such as reuse, economic analysis, and life cycle assessment.

The role of clay content and mineral surface area for soil organic carbon storage in an arable toposequence

Steffen A. Schweizer et al.

Summary: Correlations between organic carbon (OC) and fine mineral particles play a significant role in binding and increasing the persistence of organic matter (OM). The study shows that finer mineral particles may influence the storage of OC in agricultural soils through a thicker accrual of OM at the same mineral surface area within fine fractions, regardless of clay content limitations.

Storage of soil carbon as particulate and mineral associated organic matter in irrigated woody perennial crops

Andrew J. Midwood et al.

Summary: This study shows that annual crops like cereals, cotton, maize, and non-woody horticultural crops can lead to a decrease in soil carbon stocks, while cultivation of irrigated, woody perennial crops results in an accumulation of soil carbon. After decades of woody crop production, the average soil carbon concentration doubled compared to native sites.

Temperature effects on carbon storage are controlled by soil stabilisation capacities

Iain P. Hartley et al.

Summary: It is uncertain how temperature affects soil carbon storage, but research shows that soil carbon stocks decline globally with increasing temperature, especially in coarse-textured soils. Physical and chemical stabilization mechanisms play a critical role in controlling carbon storage in mineral soils, potentially leading to lower carbon losses due to climate warming than previously predicted.

Different climate sensitivity of particulate and mineral-associated soil organic matter

Emanuele Lugato et al.

Summary: Soil carbon sequestration is important in mitigating climate change, but the vulnerability of soil carbon to climate change needs to be accurately assessed. By separating soil carbon into different fractions, we can better understand its vulnerability and develop effective sequestration strategies. Different carbon fractions in soils have varying sensitivity to climate change, and management practices need to be implemented to enhance soil carbon stocks and resilience.

Quantifying the contribution of phyllosilicate mineralogy to aggregate stability in the East Asian monsoon region

Xinliang Wu et al.

Summary: Aggregate stability strongly depends on the phyllosilicate mineralogy, particularly vermiculite, showing a dominant role. Geographic location shows a unimodal trend in influencing aggregate stability, with greater disruptive forces leading to more prominent effects. In combination, soil organic carbon, exchangeable sodium, and calcium play a complementary role in affecting aggregate stability.
