Airborne hydrophilic microplastics in cloud water at high altitudes and their role in cloud formation

Yize Wang et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution is widespread in most ecosystems, but little is known about their presence in high altitude clouds and their impact on cloud formation and climate change. In this study, microplastics in cloud water collected from the summits of Japanese mountains were analyzed. Nine types of microplastics were found, and they were fragmented with concentrations ranging from 6.7 to 13.9 pieces per liter. Microplastics with hydrophilic groups were abundant, suggesting their potential role as condensation nuclei for cloud ice and water. These findings indicate that high-altitude microplastics can influence cloud formation and potentially modify the climate.

COVID-19 detection from red blood cells using highly comparative time-series analysis (HCTSA) in digital holographic microscopy

Timothy O'Connor et al.

Summary: In this study, an automated method for COVID-19 screening based on reconstructed phase profiles of red blood cells and a highly comparative time-series analysis (HCTSA) is presented. The method captures the spatio-temporal dynamics of live RBCs using digital holography, and employs time-series analysis and machine learning classification to differentiate between different cells. The system achieves an accuracy of 82.13% on a dataset of 1472 RBCs and successfully classifies most COVID-19 positive and healthy subjects.

Digital holographic deep learning of red blood cells for field-portable, rapid COVID-19 screening

Timothy O'Connor et al.

Summary: This study presents a rapid screening method for COVID-19 infection in red blood cells using a compact, field-portable 3D-printed shearing digital holographic microscope. By analyzing the spatiotemporal behavior of individual red blood cells, a bi-directional long short-term memory network is used to classify between healthy and COVID positive red blood cells. The proposed system may benefit under-resourced healthcare systems.
