Serous fluids and hematolymphoid disorders

Ali Gabali

Summary: Diagnosing hematolymphoid neoplasm through evaluating fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology samples is controversial and requires expertise. Distinguishing between low-grade lymphoma and reactive lymphocytes can be challenging, but specific features can aid in differentiation. In cases involving large cell lymphoma and leukemia cells in body fluid, the concept becomes less challenging. Additional studies such as flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry are needed for accurate diagnosis and subclassification.

Lymphoproliferative disorder involving body fluid: diagnostic approaches and roles of ancillary studies

Jiwon Koh et al.

Summary: This review discusses the diagnostic approach and utility of ancillary tests for lymphocyte-rich effusions, which can represent benign reactive processes or neoplastic conditions. Cytomorphologic features, including cellularity, atypia/pleomorphism, and cell population, can help differentiate between neoplastic and reactive processes. Proper review of clinical history, cytomorphologic examination, and use of ancillary tests are crucial for successful diagnosis.

Lymphoreticular malignancies in serous effusions: Cytomorphologic, flow cytometric and immunocytochemical analysis

Summary: Involvement of body fluids by lymphoreticular malignancies is rare but has significant prognostic implications. Cytologic examination can aid in early detection of these malignancies, though it presents challenges.
