Childhood Maltreatment, Automatic Negative Thoughts, and Resilience: The Protective Roles of Culture and Genes

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of childhood maltreatment on resilience and its relationship with automatic negative thoughts (ANT), as well as the moderating effects of culture and genetics. The findings showed that childhood maltreatment increased ANT and weakened resilience, with the mediating effects of childhood neglect stronger in American participants. The interaction between childhood abuse/neglect and polygenic scores could predict ANT, and the mediating effects of ANT on the relationship between childhood abuse/neglect and resilience were significant for participants with low polygenic scores.
