Hate Crime Reporting: The Relationship Between Types of Barriers and Perceived Severity

COVID-19-Related Discrimination Among Racial/Ethnic Minorities and Other Marginalized Communities in the United States

Summary: This study aims to determine the prevalence of COVID-19-related discrimination among major US racial/ethnic groups and estimate associations between discrimination, race/ethnicity, and other sociodemographic characteristics. The study found that COVID-19-related discrimination is common, and it appears that the pandemic has exacerbated preexisting resentment against racial/ethnic minorities and marginalized communities. Additionally, Asian and American Indian/Alaska Native adults are most likely to experience such discrimination.

Asian Australians' Experiences of Online Racism during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Summary: This paper reports the findings of an online survey conducted on Asian Australians, aimed at measuring the type and frequency of racism experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as assessing the relationship between these experiences and mental health, wellbeing, and sense of belonging. The survey revealed that 40 percent of participants experienced racism during the pandemic, with 66 percent of them experiencing it online. Younger age groups, males, those born in Australia, English speakers at home, non-Christians, and migrants who have been in Australia for less than 20 years were found to be the most likely to experience online racism. Analysis also showed a strong correlation between online racism and poor mental health, wellbeing, and belonging among Asian Australians, highlighting the damaging impact of online racism on social cohesion and individual health.

Xenophobia in the time of pandemic: othering, anti-Asian attitudes, and COVID-19

Summary: As COVID-19 cases increased worldwide, conservative elites in the US linked the pandemic to Asians, activating anti-Asian attitudes. This study analyzed the relationship between attitudes towards Asian Americans, xenophobia, concern about contracting the virus, and various behavioral outcomes and policy attitudes. The findings suggest that anti-Asian attitudes were associated with concern about the virus, xenophobic behaviors, and policy preferences.
