Electron acceleration in supernova remnants

Artem Bohdan

Summary: Supernova remnants (SNRs) play a crucial role in the production of galactic cosmic rays (CRs) through diffusive shock acceleration (DSA). However, the issue of electron injection remains unresolved and is essential for understanding the physics of SNRs. Kinetic simulations of non-relativistic high Mach number shocks provide insights into the physics of SNR shocks and the processes behind electron heating and acceleration.

Electron-Ion Temperature Ratio in Astrophysical Shocks

John C. Raymond et al.

Summary: Collisionless shock waves in supernova remnants and the solar wind exhibit different behaviors in heating electrons compared to ions, as predicted by kinetic simulations. However, the inferred values of T(e)/T(p) from H alpha profiles of supernova remnant shocks show discrepancies with the measurements in the solar wind and simulations based on Mach number or Alfven Mach number. In this study, we determine T(e)/T(p) for supernova remnant shocks using H alpha profiles, shock speeds from proper motions, and electron temperatures from X-ray spectra, while also improving the estimates of sound speed and Alfven speed for determining Mach numbers. The results demonstrate the robustness of H alpha measurements and the persistent discrepancies among supernova remnant shocks, solar wind shocks, and computer simulations. Contributing factors such as shock precursors, turbulence, and varying preshock conditions are discussed.

Relativistic Collisionless Shocks in Inhomogeneous Magnetized Plasmas

Camilia Demidem et al.

Summary: Relativistic collisionless shocks are efficient in particle acceleration in weakly magnetized homogeneous media, however, this efficiency decreases as the magnetization increases. We demonstrate that when the upstream carries kinetic-scale inhomogeneities, the particle acceleration can be revived even in highly magnetized shocks. This has important implications for astrophysical systems such as jets and accretion disks, as well as polarization signals from blazars.

Diffusive Shock Acceleration at Oblique High Mach Number Shocks

Allard Jan van Marle et al.

Summary: This article investigates the occurrence of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) in oblique high Mach number shocks. Using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and a combined PIC-magnetohydrodynamic (PIC-MHD) technique, the study examines the formation of the shock and determines the fraction of particles involved in DSA. The researchers also use PIC-MHD simulations to model the plasma and magnetic field surrounding the shock and determine whether reflected particles can generate upstream turbulence and trigger DSA. The results show that the feasibility of this process in oblique shocks depends strongly on the Alfvenic Mach number, with high Mach number shocks being more likely to trigger DSA.

Preacceleration in the Electron Foreshock. I. Electron Acoustic Waves

Paul J. Morris et al.

Summary: To undergo diffusive shock acceleration, electrons need to be preaccelerated. In oblique shocks, electrons can escape to the shock upstream and form the electron foreshock. Particle-in-cell simulations show that the proportion of reflected electrons depends on the obliquity, and these electrons can generate electrostatic waves upstream via the electron acoustic instability.

The electron foreshock at high-Mach-number non-relativistic oblique shocks

Artem Bohdan et al.

Summary: This research investigates the instabilities caused by relativistic electron beams in the extended foreshock of oblique shocks, finding that the observed electron-beam instabilities agree with predictions of a linear dispersion analysis. In the outer foreshock, the electrostatic electron-acoustic instability dominates, while denser electron beams in the inner foreshock drive the gyroresonant oblique-whistler instability.

Turbulent Magnetic Field Amplification by the Interaction of a Shock Wave and Inhomogeneous Medium

Yue Hu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that magnetic fields in young supernova remnants are amplified through turbulent dynamo effects, particularly when the magnetic field is perpendicular to the shock wave. The amplification process is driven by pre-existing density contrasts and follows the Kolmogorov scaling, resulting in a significant increase in magnetic field strength in postshock regions.

Nonthermal Particle Acceleration at Highly Oblique Nonrelativistic Shocks

Ion acceleration efficiencies of less than or similar to 5% are measured at later times, although this is not the saturated value.

Magnetic Field Amplification by the Weibel Instability at Planetary and Astrophysical Shocks with High Mach Number

Artem Bohdan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the amplification of magnetic field within nonrelativistic perpendicular shocks through large-scale particle-in-cell simulations. It is found that the magnetic field is amplified at the shock transition due to ion-ion two-stream Weibel instability and strongly correlates with the Alfvenic Mach number. Measurements derived from particle-in-cell simulations are consistent with those taken at Saturn's bow shock by the Cassini spacecraft.

Shock Propagation and Associated Particle Acceleration in the Presence of Ambient Solar-Wind Turbulence

Summary: This review paper focuses on the impact of solar wind turbulence on shock propagation and its effects on the acceleration and transport of energetic particles. The presence of upstream turbulence significantly influences particle behavior at shock fronts, particularly enhancing the trapping of low-energy charged particles near the shock. Preexisting turbulence plays a crucial role in efficiently accelerating low-energy particles and addressing the injection issue at shocks in space plasmas.
