Materials property mapping from atomic scale imaging via machine learning based sub-pixel processing

Junghun Han et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the possibility of achieving structural analysis with sub-pixel accuracy by segmenting atomic signals from background and applying denoising techniques. The elimination of Poisson noise and residual noise greatly increases the peak signal-to-noise ratio. Extracting centroids of atomic columns using K-means clustering allows for a deeper understanding of the local structural dynamics.

Atomistic structures of 0001 tilt grain boundaries in a textured Mg thin film

Siyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the grain boundary structure of nanocrystalline Mg thin film was investigated through experiments and atomistic simulations. The results show that there are abundant symmetric grain boundaries in the Mg thin film, most of which are type-1, while the formation energy of type-2 grain boundaries is higher.

UnitCell Tools, a package to determine unit-cell parameters from a single electron diffraction pattern

Hong-Long Shi et al.

Summary: A new package has been developed to determine unit-cell parameters from a single electron diffraction pattern in TEM, expanding the application range of existing electron diffraction techniques. By reconstructing a reciprocal primitive cell, converting it to a Niggli cell, and finally determining the unit cell parameters, the software addresses the impact of experimental conditions on accuracy.
