Detecting early damages in the railway pantograph mechanism: a multiple excitation approach for the frequency domain

G. Santamato et al.

Summary: In this work, we discuss the problem of damage diagnosis on railway pantograph mechanism with nonlinear behavior and sample-induced uncertainties. We conducted an experimental campaign to analyze frequency response functions using a dedicated inspection robot developed for vibration tests on pantographs. We focused on the inherent nonlinear behavior of the pantograph and estimated the damage index for different levels of input excitation. The study was conducted on a population of pantographs of the same type with three different types of damages. The results highlight the importance of including multiple excitation levels and encourage investigation in a real operational scenario.

Dynamic interaction between multiple pantographs sliding on an overhead conductor wire: a multibody and wave-based approach

Soumyajit Roy et al.

Summary: This study examines the interaction dynamics between multiple railway pantographs and an overhead high-tension conductor wire. Factors such as the separation distance between pantographs, travel speed, and base excitation phase were found to significantly influence the behavior of the pantographs. The leading pantograph may not always affect the trailing ones, with the phase of the base excitation playing a decisive role in their collective behavior.

Enhancing pantograph-catenary dynamic performance using an inertance-integrated damping system

Ming Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, an inertance-integrated damping system for pantographs was investigated to reduce contact force fluctuations. A multibody pantograph model was developed and improved to identify beneficial inertance-integrated damping systems. The results showed that a configuration with one inerter provided the best performance, reducing the maximum standard deviation of contact force by 40% across the operating speed range. Time-domain analysis and modal analysis revealed the improvement was due to the resonance frequency matching between the pantograph and catenary systems.

Summary: To increase the service speed of electric railway vehicles, the correct interaction between the pantograph and the catenary needs to be ensured. This study focused on developing mathematical models and determining parameters of pantographs, with experimental tests and simulation analyses used to verify the model. The obtained parameter values can be applied to simulation models of other railway pantographs with similar structures.

Analysis of Critical Speed for High-Speed Railway Pantograph-Catenary System

Yang Song et al.

Summary: This paper provides a theoretical explanation for the relationship between speed and interaction performance in the pantograph-catenary system. It is found that increasing speed can improve interaction performance in certain local speed regions. A validated model is used to reproduce this phenomenon, and a simple indicator is proposed to determine the local optimal speed based on the analysis of contact wire amplitude.

Identification of short-wavelength contact wire irregularities in electrified railway pantograph-catenary system

Yang Song et al.

Summary: This paper studies the effect of short-wavelength irregularities of the railway catenary on the pantograph-catenary interaction performance, exploring potential identification approaches. The analysis suggests using intrinsic mode functions and the Hilbert transform to identify local imperfections, and utilizing spectral kurtosis to identify deviating wavelengths caused by periodic short-wavelength irregularities. The study validates the methods with some improvements to current equipment.
