Reformulating Koolhaas' strategy of the void

Summary: This article explores the potential of void as a design tool on different levels, emphasizing the importance of a conscious design strategy centered around void. It analyzes the term and technique of void, focusing on four projects each from Ungers and Koolhaas. The analysis reveals that void can be perceived and interpreted differently, manifesting itself in various forms, and that it possesses characteristics of programmatic flexibility and incompleteness. Two design strategies, collaging solid figures and collaging void figures, are derived from the findings.
