Using native fish in eco-genotoxic assessment of heavy metal contamination pollution arising from nearby large Brazilian rivers

Carine de Mendonca Francisco et al.

Summary: Worldwide water quality has worsened due to continuous pollution by agrochemicals, especially heavy metals. Fish genotoxicity biomarkers are important for evaluating the environmental risk of pollutants. In this study, Cichlasoma paranaense fish were used as a model to assess the genotoxic effects of water pollution in Brazilian rivers. Samples from different river sites showed contamination by metals, with the highest concentrations of Cu in areas with forest fragmentation caused by intensive agriculture. The fish exposed to samples from agricultural areas exhibited significantly higher genotoxic effects. The results suggest that C. paranaense fish can serve as a reliable model for detecting genotoxic effects of agrochemicals.

Toxicity mechanisms and bioavailability of copper to fish based on an adverse outcome pathway analysis

Wei Liao et al.

Summary: This study provides a systematic review on the toxicity of copper to fish, identifying multiple potential mechanisms and their interactions. It was found that copper exposure impairs fish behavior, metabolism, cardiovascular function, and endocrine system. The inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase enzyme is the main pathway of acute copper toxicity to fish. Additionally, copper toxicity is influenced by water hardness and intracellular DOC concentration.

Effects of Chloramine T on zebrafish embryos malformations associated with cardiotoxicity and neurotoxicity

Carla Leticia Gediel Rivero-Wendt et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of Chloramine T on zebrafish embryos, including its lethal effects, changes in AChE activity, and developmental abnormalities. It was found that Chloramine T inhibited AChE activity at concentrations of 64 or 128 mg/L, resulting in delayed hatching and disrupted embryonic development. The study highlights the potential risks of Chloramine T as a disinfectant in fish farms. Overall, the study is rated 8 out of 10 in terms of importance.

Summary: This systematic review summarizes the use of neurotoxins as experimental models of Parkinson's disease in zebrafish embryos and larvae. A total of 56 articles were selected, utilizing neurotoxins such as MPTP, MPP+, 6-OHDA, paraquat/diquat, rotenone, and others to induce Parkinson's disease. The studies examined neurobehavioral function, dopaminergic neuron markers, oxidative stress biomarkers, and other relevant parameters in the zebrafish embryo-larval model. The review provides valuable information for researchers in selecting appropriate chemical models to study experimental parkinsonism.

Exposure to Mancozeb results in increased MAPK phosphorylation and locomotor deficits in zebrafish larvae

Illana Kemmerich Martins et al.

Summary: In this study, the toxicity of Mancozeb, a widely used fungicide, was investigated on the developmental stages of zebrafish. Exposure to non-lethal concentrations of Mancozeb during the larval period resulted in decreased motor performance, oxidative stress, apoptosis, DNA damage, and altered enzyme activities. Moreover, phosphorylation levels of proteins involved in the MAPK pathway were stimulated. These findings have important implications for understanding the ecological effects of Mancozeb exposure on fish in different developmental stages and the role of the MAPK pathway in development and cell death.

Early-life lead exposure induces long-term toxicity in the central nervous system: From zebrafish larvae to juveniles and adults

Zuo Wang et al.

Summary: Lead-induced neurotoxicity has been extensively studied, but the connection between early-life lead exposure and abnormal neurobehavior in juveniles and adults is still unclear. Using a zebrafish model, this study found that early-life exposure to lead caused neurologic damage and defective neurobehavior, with affected vitality and social behavior in juvenile and adult fish. The modulation of key genes and neuronal density changes may contribute to the observed neurobehavioral disorders.

Environmental impact of mining and beneficiation of copper sulphate mine based on life cycle assessment

Ming Tao et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the life cycle environmental impact of copper concentrate production in a typical copper sulphate mine in China. The results show that marine ecotoxicity is the largest contributor to the total environmental impact, followed by freshwater ecotoxicity, human carcinogenic toxicity, human non-carcinogenic toxicity, and terrestrial ecotoxicity. Mining, backfilling, and electricity generation are identified as the dominant factors. Sensitivity analysis reveals that controlling on-site emissions and reducing pollution from cement production are the most effective measures to solve the environmental problems caused by the concentrate production process. Technical and management measures are proposed to facilitate the development of a cleaner metal industry.
