Revisiting the Second Shift - Rethinking Value in the Outsourcing of Social Reproduction

Elisabeth Wide et al.

Summary: This article examines the link between outsourcing social reproduction and the valuation of time. Based on in-depth research on employers of migrant care and domestic workers in Finland, the analysis demonstrates how employers work a second shift of paid employment in the evening, enabled by the outsourcing of reproductive labour. By outsourcing social reproduction and converting inexpensive time into productive labour-time, employers subsidize their own labour and increase economic value for capital.

Ambivalent Strategies: Student-Migrant-Workers' Efforts at Challenging Administrative Bordering

Olivia Maury

Summary: This article delves into the means by which migrants holding a student residence permit in Finland challenge administrative borders in a constrained situation produced by the border regime, arguing that they employ pragmatic strategies using the legal framework. However, their efforts at circumventing the constraints of the border regime often become re-inscribed within the framework of capitalist production, displaying the ambivalence of migrant practices. The article contributes to the limited sociological literature on struggles around administrative borders and student-migrants' efforts at challenging migration control.

Classed and gendered transitions in youth activation: the case of Finnish youth employment services

Lotta Haikkola

Summary: This article investigates the role of youth activation and welfare conditionality in NEET young people's transitions based on ethnographic research in employment services in Helsinki, Finland. It reveals how youth employment services channel young people to a limited number of occupational tracks at the lower end of the labour market in a gendered manner, thus structuring and restricting youths' transition paths.
