How Do Board Reforms Affect Debt Financing Costs Around the World?

Hui (Zhao) Chiu et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of worldwide board reforms on the cost of debt financing. It finds that loan spreads increase after a country initiates the reform, particularly among firms with shareholder-debtholder conflicts. The results suggest that board reforms empower shareholders at the expense of debtholders. However, the study also finds that reforms related to board independence increase the cost of debt, while reforms related to audit committee independence help decrease the cost.

Causality redux: The evolution of empirical methods in accounting research and the growth of quasi-experiments

Christopher Armstrong et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the empirical methods used in accounting literature to draw causal inferences. It provides a synthesis of the major assumptions of these methods and discusses practical considerations for their application in accounting research. The paper also offers a framework for determining when quasi-experimental and non-experimental methods are suitable for addressing causal questions in accounting.

Difference-in-Differences with multiple time periods

Brantly Callaway et al.

Summary: This article discusses identification, estimation, and inference procedures for treatment effect parameters using the Difference-in-Differences (DiD) method, which is applicable to multiple time periods, variation in treatment timing, and when the parallel trends assumption holds potentially only after conditioning on observed covariates. The proposed methods allow for highlighting treatment effect heterogeneity across different dimensions and summarizing the overall effect of participating in the treatment.

Board Reforms and Dividend Policy: International Evidence

Kee-Hong Bae et al.

Summary: Board reforms implemented in 40 countries worldwide have a positive impact on corporate dividend policy, resulting in higher dividend payouts post-reform. This effect is more pronounced for firms with weak board governance prior to the reforms and those in countries with strong external governance mechanisms. The findings support the dividend outcome model, suggesting that board reforms enhance monitoring functions and empower external shareholders to influence dividend decisions.

Voice of the Customers: Local Trust Culture and Consumer Complaints to the CFPB

Rachel M. Hayes et al.

Summary: We use complaints filed with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to study the interplay between social norms and the effectiveness of consumer protection laws. We find that a higher level of trust in a given location is associated with a lower number of complaints filed against financial institutions in that location. After the establishment of the CFPB, banks in low-trust areas reduce fees charged to consumers more compared to banks in high-trust areas. Our results suggest that the threat of consumer complaints to a government agency affects how banks treat their customers, shedding light on the interaction between informal culture and formal institutions, as well as on stakeholders' influence in corporate policies.
