Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection

Iker Falces-Romero et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the incidence of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia in COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 adult patients during the pandemic period and previous years, as well as describe the characteristics of the patients in the pandemic period to identify differences. A retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary-care center, reviewing S. aureus bacteremia episodes in COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients. The results showed significantly higher incidence, methicillin resistance, and 15-day mortality rates in COVID-19 patients compared to non-COVID-19 patients.

Summary: Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis possesses anti-inflammatory properties, with the main contribution coming from its isochlorogenic acid-rich and biflavonoid-rich fractions. The main components, isochlorogenic acids A and C, as well as ochnaflavone, are primarily responsible for the anti-inflammatory effects.

Bacterial virulence plays a crucial role in MRSA sepsis

Gordon Y. C. Cheung et al.

Summary: The study found that bacterial virulence and quorum-sensing regulation play crucial roles in staphylococcal sepsis, providing important guidance for developing anti-virulence drugs. It revealed a critical early stage in the development of bacterial sepsis where the battle between bacteria and leukocytes determines the outcome of the disease. This highlights the key role of invading pathogens and their virulence mechanisms in sepsis, challenging the traditional attribution of sepsis mainly to host factors.

Multidrug-Resistant Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Associated with Bacteremia and Monocyte Evasion, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Alice Slotfeldt Viana et al.

Summary: Researchers investigated 600 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates collected in 51 hospitals in the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, metropolitan area from 2014 to 2017, and identified an emerging multidrug-resistant MRSA sublineage named the Rio de Janeiro (RdJ) clone. The study also found that the RdJ clone, which began spreading in 2009, more effectively evaded immune function compared to other related isolates.
