Yunxiang Chen et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of social and non-social loneliness on problematic smartphone use among adolescents in China. The ?loneliness epidemic?, intersecting risk factors and relations to mental health help-seeking: A population-based study during COVID-19 lockdown in Canada

Shen (Lamson) Lin

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated loneliness in Canada, with women, young people, those without a college degree, people living alone, immigrant men, those with small social networks, those absent from work due to COVID-19, binge drinkers, and cannabis users being more susceptible to pandemic loneliness. Among immigrants, those who experienced job insecurity triggered by the pandemic are at the highest risk for severe loneliness. Pandemic loneliness is associated with seeking help from mental health professionals, informal help from social circles, and unmet mental health needs.

Associations Between Problematic Internet Use and Mental Health Outcomes of Students: A Meta-analytic Review

Zhihui Cai et al.

Summary: This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between problematic internet use and students' mental health. The findings reveal a moderate positive association between problematic internet use and depressive symptoms, anxiety, loneliness, and other mental health outcomes, as well as a negative relationship with subjective well-being. Moderator analyses show that study features, such as school grade, region, measure of problematic internet use, publication year, and gender, can explain the variations in findings.

COVID-19 lockdown stress and problematic social networking sites use among quarantined college students in China: A chain mediation model based on the stressor-strain-outcome framework

Xiaoshuang Cheng et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic is associated with an increase in problematic social networking sites use globally. By using transactional stress theory and the stressor-strain-outcome (SSO) framework, we proposed and validated a chain mediation model to investigate the mediating effects of fear of missing out (FoMO) and future anxiety (FA) in the relationship between COVID-19 lockdown stress (CL stress) and problematic social networking sites use (PSNSU). Our study collected data from 670 quarantined college students in China, who responded to a COVID-19 student stress questionnaire, a social network addiction scale, a fear of missing out scale, and a dark future scale. The results showed that (1) CL stress significantly and positively predicted PSNSU, (2) both FoMO and FA mediated the relationship between CL stress and PSNSU, (3) FoMO significantly and positively predicted FA, and (4) a full chain mediation was observed between CL stress and PSNSU.

Problematic internet use and suicidality and self-injurious behaviors in adolescents: Effects of negative affectivity and social support

Mingli Liu et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between problematic internet use (PIU) and self-injurious behavior (SSIB), and to test the mediating role of negative affectivity, as well as the moderating effect of social support. Results showed that PIU was positively associated with SSIB, and this association was mediated by negative affectivity. The indirect effect of negative affectivity was moderated by social support, with a stronger association for adolescents with lower social support. These findings highlight the importance of interventions targeting negative affectivity and improving social support to reduce SSIB among adolescents.

The cross-sectional analyses showed a positive relationship between PIU and loneliness, but no association between online use and loneliness. The longitudinal relationships differed during and after lockdown, with earlier internet addiction being significantly related to later loneliness after the easing of restrictions.

Global prevalence of digital addiction in general population: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Shi-Qiu Meng et al.

Summary: This meta-analytic review aimed to synthesize the global prevalence characteristics of digital addiction in the general population. The results showed that the global prevalence rates of smartphone addiction, social media addiction, Internet addiction, cybersex addiction, and game addiction were 26.99%, 17.42%, 14.22%, 8.23%, and 6.04% respectively. Higher prevalence of digital addiction was found in the Eastern Mediterranean region and low/lower-middle income countries, and males had a higher risk for Internet and game addiction. There was an increasing trend of digital addiction over the past two decades, which worsened significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study provides the first and comprehensive estimation of the global prevalence of multiple subtypes of digital addiction, which varied between regions, economic levels, time periods of publication, genders, and assessment scales.

COVID-19 Victimization Experience and College Students' Mobile Phone Addiction: A Moderated Mediation Effect of Future Anxiety and Mindfulness

Lili Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposed a moderated mediation model to explore the link between COVID-19 victimization experience and mobile phone addiction, the mediating role of future anxiety, and the moderating role of mindfulness. The results showed that COVID-19 victimization experience significantly predicted mobile phone addiction among college students, with future anxiety fully mediating this association. Mindfulness moderated the effect of COVID-19 victimization experience on college students' future anxiety, with higher levels of mindfulness attenuating the impact.

Review: Alleviating loneliness in young people - a meta-analysis of interventions

Alice M. Eccles et al.

Summary: Interventions targeting youth have been found to reduce loneliness, but current interventions mainly focus on at-risk youth, with less attention to those reporting loneliness themselves and lacking indication of chronic or transient loneliness. Future work should design specific interventions for loneliness, with universal programs helping youth manage transient feelings of loneliness and targeted interventions for those experiencing chronic loneliness. Additionally, there is a need to explore socioeconomic and other risk factors outside the individual for targeted interventions.
