Infant-directed song potentiates infants' selective attention to adults' mouths over the first year of life

Camila Alviar et al.

Summary: Research has found that visual information from caregivers' faces is important for infants' language development. Using song instead of speech can enhance infants' attention to caregivers' mouths, especially during the second half of their first year of life, which supports speech and language development.

Acoustic regularities in infant-directed speech and song across cultures

Courtney B. Hilton et al.

Summary: When interacting with infants, humans alter their speech and song to support communication, and this phenomenon is observed globally. Our study found that the acoustic features of infant-directed vocalizations differ across different cultures but in consistent patterns. Furthermore, listeners are able to accurately recognize these infant-directed vocalizations.

Prosodic input and children's word learning in infant- and adult-directed speech

Mengru Han et al.

Summary: This study examines whether infant-directed speech (IDS) facilitates children's word learning compared to adult-directed speech (ADS), and the link between the prosody of IDS in word-learning contexts and children's word learning from ADS and IDS. The results show that 24-month-old Dutch children can reliably learn novel words from both ADS and IDS, with IDS having a facilitative effect. Furthermore, children's word learning from IDS is predicted by IDS pitch range when introducing unfamiliar words at 18 months, highlighting individual and contextual differences in IDS prosody.

Singing to infants matters: Early singing interactions affect musical preferences and facilitate vocabulary building

Fabia Franco et al.

Summary: The frequency of parent-infant singing interactions predicted infants' performance in music experiments at 6 months and mediated their language development in the second year. High levels of parental singing were associated with less pronounced preference for sung melodies at 6 months and significant advantages in language outcomes later.

Effect of music therapy on preterm infants in neonatal intensive care unit: Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Wei Yue et al.

Summary: Music therapy has shown significant effects on preterm infants' heart rate, respiratory rate, oral feeding volume, stress level, and maternal anxiety with moderate-to-high heterogeneity among studies. However, it has no influence on oxygen saturation and behavioral state. Further studies with larger sample sizes and more stringent designs are needed to provide more conclusive recommendations.

Acoustic signatures of communicative dimensions in codified mother-infant interactions

Simone Falk et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine if specific combinations of acoustic traits form characteristic signatures of different communicative dimensions during codified interactions. Pitch and duration played a prominent role in constituting these signatures, while linguistic aspects had smaller effects. Infant-directedness was identifiable in a larger set of acoustic cues.

The impact of the home musical environment on infants' language development

Aspasia Papadimitriou et al.

Summary: The study found that musical exposure in the home environment contributes to language development in infants, particularly in terms of gestures and word comprehension. This is the first evidence that an enriched musical environment in infancy can promote the development of communication skills.

War trauma and infant motor, cognitive, and socioemotional development: Maternal mental health and dyadic interaction as explanatory processes

Samir R. Qouta et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal prenatal exposure to traumatic war events did not have a direct impact on infants' developmental skills at 18 months, but instead predicted higher developmental skills. However, maternal exposure to high levels of trauma may lead to postpartum mental health problems, which in turn could affect mother-infant interaction quality and infant development.
