Fostering collective action through participation in natural resource and environmental management: An integrative and interpretative narrative review using the IAD, NAS and SES frameworks

Juan Felipe Ortiz-Riomalo et al.

Summary: Addressing humanity’s social-environmental challenges requires collective action from relevant actors, making their involvement in the policy process necessary and promising. This article reviews insights from lab experiments, case studies, and frameworks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential impacts, mechanisms, challenges, and recommendations for participatory policy interventions. The findings indicate that such interventions can foster collective action by crafting suitable institutional arrangements and addressing actors’ attributes relevant to collective action.

Participatory interventions for collective action and sustainable resource management: linking actors, situations and contexts through the IAD, NAS and SES frameworks

Juan Felipe Ortiz-Riomalo et al.

Summary: Overcoming complex environmental challenges requires involvement of stakeholders and collective action. By integrating and applying the frameworks of institutional analysis and development (IAD), network of (adjacent) action situation (NAS) and social-ecological system (SES), we can bridge the gap and provide a coherent approach to effectively address these challenges.

Investigating the links between management practices and economic performances of smallholders' oil palm plots. A case study in Jambi province, Indonesia

Romane Mettauer et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate which smallholder farming systems optimize profitability at the plot scale. Using multivariate statistical analysis, two typologies based on agricultural practices and economic performance were defined and crossed to understand the links between them at the plot level. It was found that despite initial plot homogeneity during planting phase, ex-plasma smallholders can develop very diversified management practices.

Fostering a climate-smart intensification for oil palm

Juan P. Monzon et al.

Summary: Oil palm production in Indonesia has significantly expanded through conversion of natural ecosystems to agricultural land. This study highlights the large yield gaps between large and smallholder farms, indicating that improved management practices could increase production while protecting fragile ecosystems. This research emphasizes the importance of intensifying existing plantations and limiting expansion to save forests and peatlands, and reduce carbon emissions.
