An experimental study on gas temperature characteristic in tunnel fires: The influences of sidewall restriction and sealing effect

Qing Li et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive experimental investigation on the impact of fire source position on gas temperature characteristics during the sealing process. A correlation function between the ceiling maximum gas temperature and transverse fire source position factor and sealing ratio is proposed based on theoretical analysis. Methanol pool fire experiments are conducted in a reduced tunnel, considering different fire source positions and sealing ratios. The results reveal the influence of sidewall restriction and sealing effect on maximum gas temperature and longitudinal distribution pattern.

An experimental study on burning rates of dual tandem hydrocarbon pool fires of various separation distances subjected to crossflow

Yuhang Chen et al.

Summary: The intention of this experimental work is to investigate the burning rates of two tandem-placed free-burning square pool fires under crossflow. The result showed that the burning rates of the leading pool fire (LPF) and the following pool fire (FPF) were found to be markedly different from that of the wind-blown single pool fire (SPF) and were attributable to the change of heat feedback mechanisms. The results provide a basis for better understanding the underlying physics of multiple fires mass burning fluxes caused by complex flame-flow interactions.

Experimental study on the heat flux profile upon the building facade of the window-ejected fire plume

Xiepeng Sun et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally investigates the impact of under-ventilated window-ejected fire plume on the building facade, including temperature, convective and excess heat release rate, facade flame height, and heat flux profile. Experimental data shows that flame height, aspect ratio of the opening, and convective heat release rate significantly affect the heat flux distribution on the building facade. A global model is proposed to describe the transverse evolution of heat flux on the facade.

A Large-Eddy Simulation study on the effect of fuel configuration and pan distance towards chemical species for under-ventilated compartment fire scenario

Q. Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that fuel distribution has a minor effect on heat release rate and total CO2 amount, but noticeable differences in CO generation and distribution were observed. Temperature and gas field predictions were almost identical for all dual burner cases, with significant differences observed at the rear section of the compartment.

Numerical simulation and simplified model of vehicle-induced bridge deck fire in the full-open environment considering wind effect

Rujin Ma et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the simulation of bridge deck fires with wind effects, showing that wind can strongly influence the burning process. The developed simplified model is useful for heat transfer analysis of vehicle-induced bridge deck fire accidents.

Bridge fires in the 21st century: A literature review

Jiayu Hu et al.

Summary: Bridge failures due to fires are more common than those caused by extreme weather or earthquakes, yet fire safety in bridge design is often overlooked. By discussing major 21st Century fire incidents involving bridges and reviewing methods for considering fire in design, it is hoped that codes, standards, and engineering practice will be updated to include fire safety considerations in routine bridge design.

Experimental study on temperature profile in long-narrow compartment fire with multiple lateral openings

Min Peng et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that the lateral opening conditions mainly affect the temperature near the fire source in a long-narrow compartment, and this effect does not follow a single pattern with the change of the number of lateral openings. It is recommended to keep the openings near the fire source closed and symmetrically open the openings away from the fire source in the design process.

Flame attachment effect on the distributions of flow, temperature and heat flux of inclined fire plume

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: The study on flame attachment over an inclined surface revealed that a sudden increase in flame attachment length occurred when the inclination angle of the surface increased to 20 degrees, leading to a sharp increase in temperature, heat flux, and flame spread parameter. Vortexes induced by velocity difference accelerated flame attachment, and local Richardson number and dimensionless local total heat flux were introduced to analyze the flame behavior.
