Single Cell Imaging of Electrochemiluminescence-Driven Photodynamic Therapy

Ming-Ming Chen et al.

Summary: We report a photodynamic therapy driven by electrochemiluminescence (ECL) with potential clinical applications. The ECL-generated luminescence acts as both optical readout and light source for the excitation of photosensitizer to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). Real-time monitoring of cellular processes during ECL-PDT was achieved using ECL microscopy with high spatiotemporal resolution.

Aromaticity-Enhanced pH-Responsive Electrochemiluminescence of Cyclopentadienols

Zhengang Han et al.

Summary: By employing an enhanced aromaticity strategy, a series of cyclopentadienols with excellent AIE-ECL properties were synthesized. It was found that different substituents significantly influenced the ECL emission by affecting the characteristic absorption peak intensity ratio in UV-vis spectra and LUMO-HOMO energies. The cyclopentadienol with an electron-withdrawing fluorine substituent demonstrated the best ECL performance and showed a wide response range to pH.

Chenglin Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the associations between the number and phenotypes of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). A novel anti-nonspecific adsorption immunomagnetic platform was developed and demonstrated to efficiently capture CTCs of different phenotypes. The results showed that the proportion of M-CTCs is closely associated with the progression, diagnosis, surgery, and chemotherapeutic effects in CRC patients.

The ability of trimethylamine N-oxide to resist pressure induced perturbations to water structure

Harrison Laurent et al.

Summary: Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) protects organisms from high pressure damage. Both TMAO and pressure affect water structure at the molecular level, but their combined action is not well understood. In this study, neutron scattering and computational modeling were used to investigate the influence of TMAO on water structure under 4 kbar pressure. The results show that TMAO can counteract the pressure-induced perturbation of water structure, particularly in maintaining a clear second solvation shell, enhancing hydrogen bonding between water molecules, and forming strong TMAO-water hydrogen bonds. An 'osmolyte protection' ratio at which pressure and TMAO-induced energy changes cancel out was calculated. Remarkably, this ratio also matches the concentration dependence of TMAO in organism muscle tissue as a function of depth. Therefore, osmolyte protection may provide a molecular mechanism for the survival of life in extreme environments.
