Experimental and theoretical study of anomalous temperature dependence of phonons in Y2Ti2O7 pyrochlore

P. K. Verma et al.

Summary: In this study, the temperature dependence of the phonon spectra in the pyrochlore Y2Ti2O7 was investigated using Raman spectroscopy and first-principles theoretical calculations. The experimental results showed anomalous softening of several phonons as the temperature decreased. Theoretical calculations explained the anomalies in high-frequency phonon modes, suggesting strong anharmonic phonon-phonon interactions in the pyrochlore titanates. However, the observed anomalies in low and intermediate frequency modes could not be explained by the theoretical calculations, indicating the need for more sophisticated nonperturbative treatment of the anharmonic interactions.

Role of spin-phonon and electron-phonon interactions in the phonon renormalization of (Eu1-xBix)2Ir2O7 across the metal-insulator phase transition: Temperature-dependent Raman and x-ray studies

Anoop Thomas et al.

Summary: In this study, temperature-dependent Raman scattering and x-ray diffraction studies of pyrochlore iridates (Eu1-xBix)(2)Ir2O7 were reported. The results reveal a metal-insulator phase transition and spin ordering accompanied by Weyl semimetal phase in these materials.

Importance of dynamic lattice effects for crystal field excitations in the quantum spin ice candidate Pr2Zr2O7

Yuanyuan Xu et al.

Summary: Dynamic interactions between the crystal lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom in a frustrated magnetic system using Pr2Zr2O7 as an example were explored, revealing that crystal electric field excitations of Pr3+ cannot be understood within a model of a static lattice. Vibronic interactions with a phonon split a doublet crystal field excitation, and the non-Kramers ground state doublet of Pr3+ shows unconventional splitting with strong temperature dependence, with one component decreasing on cooling. Static or dynamic deviations of Pr3+ from the ideal crystal structure are suggested to be the origin of this effect, decreasing strongly at low temperatures.

Low-energy magneto-optics of Tb2Ti2O7 in a [111] magnetic field

Xinshu Zhang et al.

Summary: Researchers performed time-domain THz spectroscopy on high-quality Tb2Ti2O7 crystals, revealing anomalous energy changes of low-energy crystal-field excitations under magnetic field. The phenomenon can be explained by the field-dependent crystal-field environment controlled by the magnetic field.
