Towards an integrated health risk assessment framework of soil heavy metals pollution: Theoretical basis, conceptual model, and perspectives

Shiyan Yang et al.

Summary: The health risk of soil heavy metals pollution has raised concerns, especially in countries that lack their own health risk assessment framework. This study reviewed the development of health risk assessment frameworks in developed countries, such as the USA, UK, and Japan, and highlighted the challenges and progress in researching soil heavy metals pollution. The incorporation of probabilistic modeling, metals bioavailability, and sources emission characteristics has become a focus in recent health risk assessment studies.

Recent advances in electrokinetic methods for soil remediation. A critical review of selected data for the period 2021-2022

Ahmed Abou-Shady et al.

Summary: Soil electrokinetics (SEK) is a method for remediation of contaminated soils, dewatering, soil restoration, pollution prevention, geophysics, seed germination, sedimentation, and consolidation. From 1993 to 2020, SEK research was classified into horizontal, vertical, and mixed approaches, with a focus on the horizontal process. In 2021 and 2022, new design modifications and innovations will be introduced to enhance SEK performance.

Behaviour of electroosmotic consolidation by electrode configuration and fracture grouting

Yunguo Du et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of electrode configuration and fracture grouting with sodium hydroxide on electroosmotic consolidation. It was found that using fracture grouting with sodium hydroxide improved the mechanical properties of dredged clay sediment, with an optimal cathode to anode ratio of 1:2. Increasing the number of cathodes did not lead to further improvements in electroosmotic consolidation, as neutralizing acidity near the anode, suppressing electrode corrosion, and facilitating water drainage were key factors in enhancing soil consolidation.

Effect of anode condition on electro-osmotic consolidation combined with vacuum preloading

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of electro-osmotic consolidation and vacuum preloading is more effective in dewatering soft soils and slurry compared to traditional vacuum preloading. The application of proper vacuum pressure can prevent soil cracking, increase electrical current output, and improve dewatering efficiency.

Electrokinetic stabilization of marine clayey soil using magnesium chloride solution: A green soil stabilizer

Yongqiang Tang et al.

Summary: The study showed that injecting 0.8% MgCl2 solution at a constant concentration of 20% was the optimal amount for electrokinetic stabilization of marine clayey soil from Zhuhai, resulting in significantly increased unconfined compressive strength. Higher concentrations of MgCl2 solution also reduced anode corrosion during the process.

Summary: Electrokinetic (EK) treatment is effective in accelerating soil consolidation and improving geotechnical properties, but electrode corrosion and loss of electrical potential may reduce efficiency. The voltage applied during the EK process significantly influences the treatment efficiency, and careful selection of the optimal voltage is crucial.

Enhancement of the electrokinetic removal of heavy metals, cations, anions, and other elements from soil by integrating PCPSS and a chelating agent

El-Metwally M. Selim et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the removal efficiency of the soil electrokinetic remediation system by adding a chelating agent (EDTA) and optimizing the key factors. The results showed that an electric potential of 3V, addition of 0.5 mol of EDTA, and an initial Ni concentration of 10-20 mg kg(-1) could optimize Ni removal. The study also revealed the order of heavy metal removal in contaminated soil, with Al having the highest removal rate and Ni having the lowest.

Field Test on Consolidation of Hydraulically Filled Sludge via Vertical Gradient Electro-osmotic Dewatering

Yan-feng Zhuang

Summary: An E-tube system is proposed to provide vertical gradient electro-osmosis and improve vacuum condition in deep soft ground. The consolidation effect is enhanced by the upward water flow generated by vertical gradient electro-osmosis and the improved vacuum condition achieved by gathering water in the E-tube. Field test results demonstrate significant improvements in consolidation, including decreased water content, increased dry density, and improved shear strength and bearing capacity.

Activated carbon coupled with citric acid in enhancing the remediation of Pb-Contaminated soil by electrokinetic method

Ning Xie et al.

Summary: The study proposed a novel method for enhancing the electrokinetic performance in remediating lead-contaminated soil by coupling activated carbon and citric acid. The synergistic effect of activated carbon and citric acid significantly improved the lead removal efficiency. The use of citric acid promoted the formation of soluble lead complexes, while the addition of activated carbon helped maintain a lower pH level in the whole EK cell, facilitating lead transportation and avoiding metal precipitation.
