Recent advances in metal-organic framework based heterogeneous catalysts for furfural hydrogenation reactions

Qiuju Fu et al.

Summary: Metal-organic framework (MOF) based heterogeneous catalysts are widely used in furfural (FFR) hydrogenation reactions. This review summarizes recent advances in upgrading FFR over MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts, ranging from MOFs and MOF derivatives to MOF composites. It also highlights critical issues and perspectives in the hydrogenation of FFR to high-value-added chemicals. This review provides valuable guidance for the preparation and rational design of MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts for upgrading FFR to high value-added chemicals.

Understanding hydrogen pressure control of furfural hydrogenation selectivity on a Pd(111) model catalyst

Robert Bavisotto et al.

Summary: We investigated the influence of hydrogen pressure on the selectivity of furfural hydrogenation on palladium. Our findings show that at low hydrogen pressures, decarbonylation products are formed, while at higher pressures, 2-methyl furan is produced. This change in selectivity is attributed to the effect of co-adsorbed hydrogen on the orientation of furfural adsorbed on the surface. The results obtained from studying the hydrogenation of furfural on a Pd(111) single crystal support this postulate.

On the Role of Cu+ and CuNi Alloy Phases in Mesoporous CuNi Catalyst for Furfural Hydrogenation

Wenting Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, KIT-6-templated mesoporous CuNiOx catalysts were synthesized and used for the selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. Experimental characterization and theoretical calculation revealed the critical role of Cu+ species in hydrogen activation and the correlation between Cu+ concentration and hydrogenation activities. The CuNi alloy phase was identified as the active adsorption site for furfural, and the difference in adsorption configurations led to a shift in product selectivity. The interplay between Cu+ sites and CuNi alloy phase was proposed to enhance the activity of CuNi catalysts in furfural hydrogenation. The structure-activity relationships established in this work provide a rationale for similar catalytic systems involving hydrogenation of C=O or/and C=C groups.

Atomically-ordered active sites in NiMo intermetallic compound toward low-pressure hydrodeoxygenation of furfural

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the superior catalytic performance of a NiMo intermetallic compound (IMC) catalyst in furfural hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) to 2-methylfuran (2-MF), highlighting the decisive effect of atomically-ordered active sites on activation of oxygen-containing functional groups and product selectivity. The ordered Ni-Mo bimetallic sites in IMC facilitate the activation and cleavage of C-OH bonds in intermediates, leading to enhanced production of 2-MF, which can potentially be extended to catalytic upgrading of biomass-derived platform molecules.
