Bipolar membrane electrodialysis combined with ozone oxidation wet scrubbing to remove SO2 and NOx from flue gas and achieve CO2 mineralization

Yingying Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new process, based on bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED), for the simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx and mineralization of CO2 from flue gas. The process involves the mineralization of CO2 into calcium carbonate using calcium ions in seawater and the removal of SO2 and NOx by wet scrubbing. The OH- generated by the bipolar membrane acts as an absorbent, and ozone (O3) serves as an oxidizer for NO. Experimental results showed that higher current density enhances the absorption rate of CO2 but also leads to the precipitation of calcium and magnesium, reducing the purity and added value of the product. Increasing the liquid flow rate reduces membrane surface resistance and decreases energy consumption. Higher SO2 concentration and n (O3/NO) significantly improve NOx removal efficiency but also consume more OH- and inhibit CO2 absorption. Under optimal conditions, the average CO2 absorption rate, decalcification rate, denitrification rate, and desulfurization rate were 53.57%, 92.56%, 87.61%, and close to 100% respectively. The study optimized the decalcification process to produce aragonite-type calcium carbonate and reduce energy consumption by utilizing the self-crystallization process of calcium carbonate induced by crystal seed.

Construction of bipolar membrane electrodialysis reactor for removal and recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater

Yinghan Cao et al.

Summary: A bipolar membrane electrodialysis method was used to treat simulated nitrogen and phosphorus wastewater, and the separation and enrichment efficiency and migration rate of NH4+ and PO43- were determined. The results showed that the removal rates of PO43- and NH4+ increased with the extension of time. Meanwhile, with the increase of current density, the removal rate of NH4+ and PO43- in wastewater chamber is accelerated. The energy consumption increases gradually with the increase of current density.

Extended Donnan-Manning theory for selective ion partition and transport in ion exchange membrane

Ruoyu Wang et al.

Summary: The use of ion exchange membranes (IEMs) leverages the selectivity of the membranes for electrochemical ion-ion separation, but a mechanistic model for relating selectivity with membrane properties is lacking. In this study, we extend Manning's counter-ion condensation model to mixed salts scenarios and evaluate its performance against experimental data. Our analysis shows that the extended Donnan-Manning model generally outperforms the ideal Donnan model and the Donnan-Affinity model in predicting ion partitioning and mobility selectivity. However, its performance for anion exchange membranes is still unsatisfactory.
