Atrophy asymmetry in hippocampal subfields in patients with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment

Amir Reza Jahanshahi et al.

Summary: Volumetric analysis of hippocampal subfields and their asymmetry assessment is a useful biomarker in neuroscience research. This study evaluated hippocampal subfields atrophy and their asymmetry patterns in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). MRI images of AD patients, MCI patients, and healthy controls were analyzed, and the volumes of hippocampal subfields were automatically extracted. The results showed that the hippocampal subfields volume in AD patients was significantly smaller than in HC and MCI groups, and the asymmetry index of some subfields differed significantly between AD and MCI as well as between AD and HC.

Volume changes of hippocampal and amygdala subfields in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease

Hang Qu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the hippocampal and amygdala subfields in AD, MCI, and NC groups using MRI and found smaller volumes in AD group compared to MCI and NC groups. Trend analysis also revealed atrophy in most subfields with declining cognitive function. The analysis showed that specific neuroimaging biomarkers can assist in the clinical diagnosis of MCI and AD.

Volumetric changes within hippocampal subfields in Alzheimer's disease continuum

Emre Hari et al.

Summary: This study aimed to track volumetric changes of hippocampal subfields in the Alzheimer's disease continuum (ADC) by comparing three stages. The results showed significant volume reductions in CA1, DG, and SUB in Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) patients compared to both amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) groups. No significant volumetric changes were found between the SCI and MCI groups. The results highlight the importance of significant volume loss in DG and the resilience of the CA3 sector.

Hippocampal Subfields in Mild Cognitive Impairment: Associations with Objective and Informant-Report of Memory Function

Deirdre M. O'Shea et al.

Summary: This study found that there is a relationship between memory difficulties in individuals with MCI and the volume of hippocampal subfields. Specifically, larger volumes of the presubiculum, subiculum, and CA4/dentate gyrus were associated with higher delayed recall scores and fewer informant-reports of memory difficulties.

Association of naturally occurring antibodies to β-amyloid with cognitive decline and cerebral amyloidosis in Alzheimer's disease

Yu-Hui Liu et al.

Summary: The levels of naturally occurring antibodies to beta-amyloid (NAbs-A beta) in Alzheimer's disease were found to be associated with A beta burden and cognitive decline, indicating a dynamic response of the adaptive immune system in AD progression.

Altered structural covariance of hippocampal subregions in patients with Alzheimer's disease

Tongpeng Chu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the altered gray matter structural covariance of hippocampal subregions in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Changes in the structural covariance network of the hippocampal subregions were observed, leading to weakened transmission efficiency. The volumes of certain hippocampal subregions were significantly correlated with MMSE scores, providing new insights into the neurobiological mechanisms of AD patients.
