Integrating real-world data in cost-effectiveness analysis of universal HLA-B15:02 screening in Malaysia

Summary: Despite the availability of newer antiseizure medications, carbamazepine (CBZ) remains the gold standard. However, patients of Asian ancestry are susceptible to CBZ-related severe cutaneous adverse reactions. Universal HLA-B*15:02 screening is a promising intervention to address this.

The pharmacogenomics of carbamazepine-induced cutaneous adverse drug reaction in the South of Vietnam

Ai-Hoc Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between HLA-B*15:02 and Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions in the Vietnamese population, particularly in the South of Vietnam. The results showed that the HLA-B*15:02 gene increased the risk of SJS by 12.5 times in CBZ-treated patients, but had no impact on Mild Cutaneous Adverse Reactions. Further investigation is needed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of this test and accelerate the protection of the Southern Vietnamese population.

Summary: HLA-B*15:02 screening before prescribing CBZ to epilepsy patients in Indonesia is not cost-effective according to the cost-effectiveness model, but the positive outcomes in other Asian countries may influence the desirability of implementation in Indonesia despite the suboptimal cost-effectiveness.
