Measurement of solids holdup in a gas-solid fluidized bed: an experimental, statistical and ANN approach

Mona Mary Varghese et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively measures the solid flow properties using an optical fiber probe in a lab-scale gas-solid fluidized bed. The influence of superficial gas velocities and static bed heights on particles of different size ranges are analyzed. The results showed that the solid holdup varied with the bed height and gas velocity, and there were differences in solid holdup between the center and the wall of the bed.

Particle image velocimetry investigations on multiphase flow in fluidized beds: A review

Ajita Neogi et al.

Summary: Fluidized Beds (FBs) are widely used in the energy sector for their superior contact performance. The shift from conventional pressure sensors to direct flow image acquisition and processing has greatly advanced the measurement of multiphase flows. PIV and DIA are used to acquire flow field data and reveal hidden flow patterns. Although there is extensive research on gas-solid FBs using PIV, liquid-solid and gas-liquid-solid systems are still catching up. This review provides a concise account of PIV studies on all types of FBs in the past two decades and discusses the limitations and future directions for PIV measurements.

Effect of particle shape on the hydrodynamics of gas-solid fluidized bed

Venkata Charan Reddy Eppala et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of non-spherical particle shape on the hydrodynamics of a rectangular gas-solid fluidized bed is numerically investigated using a coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics - Discrete Element Method approach. The accuracy of the model is validated by comparing the predicted results with experimental data. The results show a strong relationship between particle sphericity and fluidization behavior.

CFD-DEM study on fluidization characteristics of gas-solid fluidized bed reactor containing ternary mixture

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fluidization characteristics of a gas-solid fluidized bed reactor containing ternary particles using coupled computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method simulations. The results show that increasing the superficial gas velocity can enhance the overall mixing degree and mitigate the discrepancy caused by particle shape.

Prediction of solid circulation rate in an internal circulating fluidized bed: An empirical and ANN approach

Mona Mary Varghese et al.

Summary: This study aims to predict the solids circulation rate in an in-house ICFB using an empirical model and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique. The models were developed based on solid circulation rates measured at different operating and design conditions using a high-speed video camera. The ANN model, with four input variables, showed close solid circulation rate prediction compared to experimental data, outperforming the empirical model in terms of accuracy.

Numerical and experimental investigations of instability in a spouted bed with non-spherical particles

Tianyu Wang et al.

Summary: The instability of a spouted bed containing non-spherical particles was investigated both numerically and experimentally. Conditions that created an S-shaped gas channel in the center of the bed proved the instability of non-spherical particles. The study also revealed that the granular temperature distribution of the particles and bubbles was associated with the gas channel region.

Chaos and recurrence analyses of pressure signals from bubbling fluidized beds

Avinash Vaidheeswaran et al.

Summary: Results of chaos and recurrence analyses of pressure signals in bubbling fluidized beds are presented, showing fractal measures that confirm deterministic chaos and elucidate multiphase dynamics at different scales in cylindrical columns. Non-linear analysis provides more insight when traditional scale-up studies become difficult.

Characterization of gas-solid flow in a cold fluidized bed from signals of a non-invasive electrical charge sensor

Emerson dos Reis et al.

Summary: This study utilized a ring-type electrical charge sensor to monitor gas-solid flows in fluidized beds, characterized flow regimes by calculating Kolmogorov complexity, and identified fluidization regimes accurately through normalized cross-correlation analysis of data sets from time-series, PDF, and PSD.
