A general finite element based non-local theory for the medium-long-range correlation of metallic glasses

Y. H. Mo et al.

Summary: Mean-field theory is widely used to simplify complex problems, but it tends to overlook the non-local effects between interacting particles. This paper presents a non-local mean-field approximation based on the finite element method, which captures the spatial correlation of materials and demonstrates good agreement with experimental measurements. The model also reveals the self-organization and evolution mechanism in two and three dimensions, opening up possibilities for applying mean-field theories to non-local phenomena.

Research status of femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers processing on bulk metallic glasses (BMGs)

Weilin Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, research on the surface modification of metal glass by laser processing has increased, indicating the interesting interaction between laser and metal glass surface. Femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers are the most prominent in this field due to their narrow pulse width, high energy density, and short action time. This review summarizes the research field, introduces the properties and applications of metallic glass, the processing characteristics of femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers, and explains the complex process between laser and metallic glass from a microscopic perspective. Additionally, the influence of microscopic mechanism on the structure, as well as the properties of micro-nano structures, are also discussed, which is of great significance to the surface functionalization of metallic glass.

Summary: Laser shock peening (LSP) is widely used in the manufacturing industry to improve the mechanical performance of metallic components by introducing compressive residual stress and finer grain. Proper design of processing parameters can greatly enhance fatigue performance. Studies have shown that residual stress and microstructure play crucial roles in fatigue improvement and failure mechanisms of peened metallic materials.

Effect of Cryogenic Thermal Cycling on Tribocorrosion Performance of Fe-Based Bulk Amorphous Alloy in 3.5 Pct NaCl Solution

Juan Jin et al.

Summary: The effects of cryogenic thermal cycling on the tribocorrosion behavior of Fe41Co7Cr15Mo14C15B6Y2 bulk amorphous alloy in 3.5 pct NaCl solution were studied. The results showed that the cryogenic thermal cycling treatment increased the relaxation enthalpy and fracture toughness, while decreasing the hardness. Additionally, the corrosion resistance was improved due to the formation of a more stable passive film. The corrosive wear rates of the alloy decreased with the increase of the number of cryogenic thermal cycles, and the wear rate after 60-cycle treatment was significantly lower compared to 316L SS. Cryogenic thermal cycling also reduced the coefficient of friction, and the dominant wear mechanism was abrasive wear combined with corrosive wear. The improved toughness and passivation ability resulting from cryogenic thermal cycling were responsible for the enhanced tribocorrosion resistance. Therefore, cryogenic thermal cycling could be an effective method to improve the tribocorrosion performance of amorphous alloys and coatings in marine environment.

Effect of deep cryogenic cycling treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-based bulk metallic glass

J. W. Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of deep cryogenic cycle treatment (DCT) on the microstructure and mechanical behaviors of Ti33Zr30Cu9Ni5.5Be22.5 bulk metallic glass (BMG). The results showed that DCT increased relaxation enthalpy, room-temperature plasticity, and compressive plasticity. The enhancement of plasticity was attributed to the increase in shear transformation zone (STZ) volumes and decrease in shear band formation energy induced by DCT.

Summary: The Fe-based amorphous coating deposited on invar steel substrates through CCT treatment showed improved toughness and enhanced wear performance. The friction coefficient and wear rate initially increased, then decreased, but eventually increased again with the increase of CCT cycles. Delamination wear was the main wear mechanism observed in all samples, showing variations in degree corresponding to the tribological behavior of the amorphous coating.

Identification of rejuvenation and relaxation regions in a Zr-based metallic glass induced by laser shock peening

Zaid Hamid Mahmoud et al.

Summary: Laser shock peening treatment was performed on Zr35Ti30Cu10Ni5Be20 bulk metallic glass to evaluate the effects of induced energy on the glassy structure characteristics. The surface of the material exhibited high heterogeneous structure, while a relaxed region with minimal heterogeneity was found at a depth of 1.5-2mm in the BMG sample. It is suggested that the relaxation region is due to the satisfaction of elastic adaptability resulting from nanoscale shear events and induced stress.

Revealing the structural heterogeneity of metallic glass: Mechanical and nanoindentation

K. Tao et al.

Summary: Microstructural heterogeneity in metallic glasses plays a crucial role in influencing their mechanical and physical properties. Researchers have found that severe plastic deformation can enhance the spatial structural heterogeneity and reduce the energy barrier for shear transformation zones (STZs) activation. The study suggests that decreasing barriers and increasing nucleation sites of STZs during physical aging to rejuvenation may improve the plasticity in metallic glasses.

Tribological characteristics of Ti-based bulk metallic glass via deep cryogenic-cycling treatment

Qian Jia et al.

Summary: Ti45Zr16Cu10Ni9Be20 bulk metallic glass with deep cryogenic-cycling treatment (DCT) exhibited increased wear resistance at the cost of decreased hardness in macroscopic wear tests. The wear mechanism shifted from severe fatigue wear to mild ductile ploughing, while oxidation wear played a minor role. The competition between lower hardness and higher elastic recovery resulted in a lower friction coefficient, indicating the potential of DCT in designing wear-resistant BMGs.

Abnormal change in dynamic mechanical behavior of metallic glass by laser shock peening

Yansen Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic mechanical properties of Zr-based metallic glasses before and after laser shock peening (LSP) treatment, revealing a significant increase in storage modulus near the glass transition temperature and an increased deviation between experimental results and theory prediction. A competing mechanism between liquid-like region change and pre-existing fringe-like precipitations was proposed to explain the unusual dynamic behaviors of metallic glasses after LSP treatment. The results provide insightful information about the microstructural changes and viscoelastic properties of metallic glasses post LSP.
