Eco-friendly synthesis of durable aerogel composites from chitosan and pineapple leaf-based cellulose for Cr(VI) removal

Luon Nguyen Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, bio-based aerogels were successfully synthesized from pineapple leaves and chitosan for the removal of chromium (VI) contaminants in water. The synthesized aerogels exhibited lightweight, high porosity, durability, and acid resistance. The chitosan content and pH of the medium were found to significantly affect the chromium (VI) adsorption. The cellulose/chitosan aerogel showed a high retention rate of chromium absorption capacity after multiple absorbing cycles.

On the Behavior of Honeycomb, Grid and Triangular PLA Structures under Symmetric and Asymmetric Bending

Vasile Cojocaru et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing technologies allow the production of lightweight components with various patterns and densities of infills. Infill geometries must satisfy strength and stiffness requirements while reducing mass and material consumption. This study analyzes the behavior of three commonly used infill geometries (honeycomb, grid, and triangles) in symmetric and asymmetric bending. The results show similar behaviors for honeycomb and triangular structures along the Y and Z principal axes of inertia, and highlight the larger displacements of the grid structure compared to the other two structures in relation to the consumed volume of material.

Non-Conventional Reinforced EPS and Its Numerical Examination

Katalin Voith et al.

Summary: In recent decades, both EPS (expanded polystyrene) and XPS (extruded polystyrene) have been widely used as thermal insulation materials. The circular economy has become crucial in our current economic situation, emphasizing the need to maximize the lifespan of products and minimize waste generation. This research aims to produce reinforced EPS material with comparable physical and thermal properties to XPS, which is more expensive to produce. By utilizing plastic straws and cutlery, as well as renewable agricultural materials like wheat straws, the focus is on mapping possible raw materials and minimizing waste through reuse.

Slab-on-grade thermal bridges: A thermal behavior and solution review

Ali El Saied et al.

Summary: The building industry plays a significant role in global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This paper focuses on reducing heat losses in buildings, particularly through floor foundations. It provides a comprehensive evaluation of thermal bridges (TBs), with an emphasis on slab-on-grade TBs. Different types of TBs are defined and evaluation standards are presented. Common approaches for evaluating TBs, such as the U-value method, equivalent method approach, and three-dimensional dynamic method, are discussed. The paper also explores the impact of soil thermal conductivity on TBs and presents exterior insulation solutions to reduce heat losses. Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of trapezoidal double insulation in minimizing TBs. The paper concludes by suggesting directions for further research.
