Research on freshwater water quality criteria, sediment quality criteria and ecological risk assessment of triclosan in China

Xinyu Liu et al.

Summary: This study aims to derive water quality criteria (WQC) and sediment quality criteria (SQC) for protecting Chinese aquatic organisms from triclosan (TCS) and perform ecological risk assessment. WQC of TCS was derived based on acute and chronic toxicity data using species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models, and SQC was derived through phase-equilibrium partitioning method. The results suggest the existence of certain ecological risks of TCS in Chinese rivers and sediments.

Proportional contributions to organic chemical mixture effects in groundwater and surface water

David Spurgeon et al.

Summary: Semi-quantitative GC-MS and LC-MS measurements were used to assess the overall magnitude and contribution of organic chemicals to mixture hazard in groundwater and surface waters. The analysis showed that the hazard from a mixture of substances was higher than that from any single chemical, but the contribution of the most important chemical to the overall mixture effect was not large.

Heterogeneity in biological assemblages and exposure in chemical risk assessment: Exploring capabilities and challenges in methodology with two landscape-scale case studies

Christopher M. Holmes et al.

Summary: This article explores the use of georeferenced data and spatial tools to account for landscape heterogeneity in chemical exposure and ecological assemblages in prospective risk assessment. Two aquatic case studies are used to demonstrate the feasibility of estimating georeferenced predicted environmental concentrations and establishing the distribution of species assemblages with available data, models, and tools. The studies highlight the importance of data aggregation and statistical metrics in assessing and interpreting risk at different spatial scales and patterns of distribution within the landscape.

Evaluating the biological validity of European river typology systems with least disturbed benthic macroinvertebrate communities

Jonathan F. Jupke et al.

Summary: Human activities have greatly impacted freshwater ecosystems globally, leading to a loss of biodiversity. Regulatory frameworks, such as the Water Framework Directive, have been developed to address this issue. However, this study found that the current typology systems, including the Broad River Types, do not effectively capture the differences in macroinvertebrate communities across Europe.

Cross-species extrapolation of chemical sensitivity

Sanne J. P. van den Berg et al.

Summary: This review discusses existing cross-species extrapolation methodologies, emphasizing the benefits of modelling approaches based on ecologically relevant and robust effects for risk assessment. It also explores predictors useful for explaining differences in species sensitivity, highlighting the importance of addressing heterogeneity in training data for model reliability. Additionally, statistical considerations are examined, recommending publication of scientific code with studies to clarify modelling choices and improve understanding of the resulting models.
