Fracture mechanical finite element analysis for delaminated composite plates applying the first-order shear deformation plate theory

Bence Hauck et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors focus on the finite element discretization of delaminated polymer composite plates for fracture mechanical analysis. They use the first-order shear deformation plate theory and two equivalent single layers. The analysis includes linear elastic orthotropic material behavior and the determination of the energy release rate along the crack front through the J-integral. The authors discuss the differences derived from the continuity conditions and boundary conditions between the semi-analytical and finite element approaches.

An efficient and versatile use of the VCCT for composites delamination growth under fatigue loadings in 3D numerical analysis: the Sequential Static Fatigue algorithm

L. M. Martulli et al.

Summary: In this study, a new VCCT-based 3D fatigue propagation algorithm (SSF) is introduced to accurately simulate the fatigue propagation of delamination defects. Compared to the benchmark algorithm, the SSF significantly reduces computational time by three orders of magnitude and achieves better accuracy. This work establishes a more efficient modelling technique for fatigue delamination propagation.

Modified equivalent single layer theory for dynamic analysis of rotating composite shafts

Safa Ben Arab et al.

Summary: This paper presents a dynamic study of the rotating composite shaft vibratory behavior and the effects of different mechanical coupling. The close agreement in the achieved results proves the efficiency of the developed finite element based on Modified ESLT. Furthermore, obtained results revealed that different mechanical coupling, fiber orientations and stacking sequences have an important influence on the rotating composite shaft dynamic behavior.

Delamination detection in composite plates using random forests

Dao Kun Lim et al.

Summary: This paper presents an alternative strategy for simultaneous predictions of severity and location parameters of delamination in composite plates using a combination of random forests (RF) and natural frequency-shift damage assessment methods. The study includes the establishment of a robust finite element (FE) procedure, validation of the FE procedure, and development of four RF models with different architectures. Results show that the proposed RF-based method is capable of accurately predicting five parameters quantifying the location and severity of delamination in composite plates, with a coefficient of correlation as high as 0.996 and up to 90% accuracy for classifying the delaminated interface.

Application of differential quadrature method to delaminated first-order shear deformable composite plates

Andras Szekrenyes

Summary: This work applied the differential quadrature method to composite plates with delamination, using two and four equivalent single layers to provide numerical results. The convergence of deflection was compared to analytical and finite element models, showing deviations between upper and lower bounds. It was found that the method of two equivalent single layers exhibits an oscillatory phenomenon in mode-II components. Additionally, the importance of proper grid structure to avoid waviness in mode-III energy release rate was highlighted when using four equivalent single layers.
