Garbage-classification policy changes characteristics of municipal-solid-waste fly ash in China

Zixing Liu et al.

Summary: Policy has a significant influence on the contents and leaching characterizations of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash. The implementation of garbage-classification policy led to changes in the content of chloride and heavy metals. The presence of calcium chloride hydroxide (CaClOH) resulted in a decrease in heavy metal leaching concentrations and more stable chemical speciation. Therefore, adjustments in fly ash treatment technologies and running parameters are necessary after the implementation of the garbage-classification policy.

Water washing and acid washing of gasification fly ash from municipal solid waste: Heavy metal behavior and characterization of residues

Junde Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of water washing and acid washing on gasification fly ash. The results showed that different re-precipitates could be identified in washed GFAs depending on different pH conditions. Low-concentration acid washing reduced heavy metal leachabilities, while high-concentration acid washing effectively extracted Zn and Cd. Applying 1.2 M-HCl washing for 15 minutes achieved a Pb extraction ratio of 81.2%.

Migration, solidification/stabilization mechanism of heavy metal in lightweight ceramisite from co-sintering fly ash and electrolytic manganese residue

Xinyuan Zhan et al.

Summary: Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash and electrolytic manganese residue were used to produce lightweight ceramisite by mixing with coal fly ash. The migration, transformation, and stabilization/solidification mechanism of heavy metals during the ceramisite formation process were investigated. Heavy metals in ceramisite pellets were concentrated and transported among solids below 710 degrees Celsius, and then released into the flue gas as chlorides above 710 degrees Celsius, particularly for Pb, Cd, and Cu. The generation of heavy metal chlorides depended on the presence of silicon oxide and aluminum oxide, resulting in a higher volatilization rate of copper compared to Mn, Zn, and Cr. Remaining heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, and Cr in the solid phase were prone to ion exchange, balance charge, and specific adsorption with calcium-bearing minerals in ceramisite at 1160 degrees Celsius based on mineral analysis and principle component analysis.

Performance deterioration of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash-based geopolymer under sulfuric acid attack

Yanying Bai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the durability of geopolymer made from red mud-slag activated by carbide slag municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (CRMG) as a solidification and stabilization binder for heavy metals exposed to sulfuric acid solution. The results showed that CRMG had a higher acid resistance than Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in terms of visual appearance and mass loss. After 112 days of exposure, CRMG's compressive strength remained higher than OPC's, with a 20% loss in strength. The leaching concentration of CRMG was below the national standard.

Comprehensive study of recycling municipal solid waste incineration fly ash in lightweight aggregate with bloating agent: Effects of water washing and bloating mechanism

Siyu Han et al.

Summary: Recycling municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (FA) into lightweight aggregate (LWA) through sintering is a promising technology. In this study, the combination of FA and washed FA (WFA) with bentonite and SiC as the bloating agent was investigated. It was found that water washing and increased FA/WFA improved LWA bloating extent and reduced bloating temperature range. However, excessive FA/WFA usage hindered LWA bloating. By using 50 wt% WFA, LWA that meet the standard of GB/T 17431 could be prepared. The study also revealed the stabilization of heavy metals during LWA production and the bloating mechanism of high CaO content systems.

Dongyang He et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively reviews four thermal separation methods for extracting heavy metals from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash, comparing them in terms of separation effectiveness, economic feasibility, technical maturity, and environmental impact. Additionally, the possibility of urban mining from MSWI fly ash is evaluated, indicating significant environmental and social benefits despite potentially higher costs. Finally, the limitations of existing thermal separation methods and the focus of further research, including both mechanisms and experimental investigations, are outlined.

The effects of washing solvents on the properties of ceramsite and heavy metal immobilization via the cosintering of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and Cr-containing waste glass

Jianli Huang et al.

Summary: Different washing solvents have significant impacts on the recycling and reutilization of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (FA). The washing process increases calcium oxide content and reduces soluble salt level. Washing pretreatment reduces the environmental risk of ceramsite, and introduction of phosphorus could enhance heavy metal immobilization.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the addition of waste glass effectively strengthens Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) fly ash and immobilizes the heavy metals within it. Experimental results show that the immobilization efficiency of chromium increases with the addition of waste glass, while the efficiency of copper, lead, zinc, and cadmium depends on the final pH of the eluant.
