The Blood Microbiome and Health: Current Evidence, Controversies, and Challenges

Hong Sheng Cheng et al.

Summary: Blood is no longer considered as sterile, as there is emerging evidence of genetic materials of microbes or pathogens in the blood circulation. The concept of a blood microbiome is crucial for physical well-being, but a core healthy blood microbiome has not been established. Dysbiosis of the blood microbial profile is associated with various health conditions, and specific microbial taxa have been identified in certain diseases. The presence of culturable blood microbes is still debated, but the genetic materials in the blood can potentially be used to enhance precision medicine for cancers, pregnancy-related complications, and asthma.

Up-to-Date Pathologic Classification and Molecular Characteristics of Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma

Taek Chung et al.

Summary: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is an aggressive primary liver malignancy with distinct histopathologic features and molecular profiles. The classification of small duct type and large duct type iCCA provides important insights into the tumor behavior and prognosis. Understanding the tumor microenvironment and genomic characteristics can help develop precision therapeutics for patients with iCCA.

Cell of origin in biliary tract cancers and clinical implications

Agrin Moeini et al.

Summary: Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are aggressive epithelial malignancies with rising incidence and mortality rates, emphasizing the need for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. BTCs exhibit high inter- and intra-tumour heterogeneity at both morphological and molecular levels. Recent research has focused on histopathological subtyping and the cell of origin of these tumors, highlighting distinct molecular alterations and potential cells of origin.
