An Algorithm to Detect Endangered Cultural Heritage by Agricultural Expansion in Drylands at a Global Scale

Francesc C. Conesa et al.

Summary: This article introduces AgriExp, a remote-based workflow using Google Earth Engine to rapidly map and monitor endangered archaeological and cultural heritage locations threatened by agricultural expansion. The algorithm utilizes Sentinel-2 imagery to map vegetation changes and provides spatial indicators of potential site disturbance. It also incorporates multi-temporal imagery for photo-interpretation of critically endangered sites. AgriExp was successfully tested in the Cholistan Desert and the algorithm code is provided for easy implementation in other areas.

Desertification modeling in the Moroccan Middle Atlas using Sentinel-2A images and TCT indexes (case of the Ain Nokra Forest)

Khalid El Hairchi et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the quantitative modeling of desertification in Ain Nokra Forest, Morocco's Middle Atlas regions. By using Sentinel-2A images, the study calculates spectral indices such as NDVI, albedo, and TCT indices, and creates a feature space through linear regression analysis. The best index combination is TCG-TCB, followed by NDVI-albedo, with correlation ratios of -0.80 and -0.63 respectively. Through the proposed Desertification Degree Index (DDI), the forest is found to be progressively desertifying, with 40% classified as severe to intense desertification and 51% as weak to moderate desertification. The model achieves an overall accuracy of 88.32%, making it highly effective for desertification analysis and monitoring in the Middle Atlas of Morocco.

Remote Sensing for Biocultural Heritage Preservation in an African Semi-Arid Region: A Case Study of Indigenous Wells in Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia

Pamela Ochungo et al.

Summary: The region of Southern Ethiopia and Northern Kenya is characterized by erratic rainfall, limited surface water, aridity, and frequent droughts. Indigenous communities have developed sophisticated water management systems, including hand-excavated deep wells, to adapt to these conditions. However, these systems and wells are increasingly threatened by climate change, demographic growth, and socio-economic development.

Conterminous United States Landsat-8 top of atmosphere and surface reflectance tasseled cap transformation coefficients

Yongguang Zhai et al.

Summary: The study derived the TCT coefficients for Landsat-8 OLI surface reflectance and top of atmosphere reflectance using the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization method. The coefficients were validated by comparing with the National Land Cover Database. The results showed that the derived coefficients effectively characterized brightness, greenness, and wetness components and could discriminate land cover types and track seasonal surface variations.
