A transformer-based deep neural network for detection and classification of lung cancer via PET/CT images

Khalil Barbouchi et al.

Summary: Lung cancer, the leading cause of death globally, can be detected and classified using deep learning techniques in positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) images. This study proposes an automated approach based on transformers and the DETR model for tumor detection and staging in lung cancer patients. The approach achieves satisfactory results in tumor localization, T staging, and histology classification, outperforming existing methods. It detects tumors with an IOU of 0.8 and classifies T-stage and histologic subtypes with accuracies of 0.97 and 0.94, respectively.

Computer-Aided Classification of Cell Lung Cancer Via PET/CT Images Using Convolutional Neural Network

Dhekra El Hamdi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel approach to assess the ability of PET/CT images for the classification of lung cancer using artificial intelligence techniques. A multi output CNN is built to assist in the staging of patients with lung cancer, using the TNM staging system and histologic subtypes classification as reference. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves good performance in TN staging and histology classification.

MULTIMODAL INTERACTIVE LUNG LESION SEGMENTATION: A FRAMEWORK FOR ANNOTATING PET/CT IMAGES BASED ON PHYSIOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL CUES

Verena Jasmin Hallitschke et al.

Summary: Recently, deep learning has been used to accurately segment various diseases in medical imaging. However, this often requires a large amount of manual voxel annotations, which becomes more complex when dealing with PET/CT data where not all required information is available in a single domain. In this study, a multimodal interactive segmentation framework is proposed to address these issues by combining anatomical and physiological cues from PET/CT data.

Early lung cancer diagnostic biomarker discovery by machine learning methods

Ying Xie et al.

Summary: The study successfully identified a specific combination of six metabolic biomarkers that enables discrimination between stage I lung cancer patients and healthy individuals, and proposed Naive Bayes as an exploitable tool for early lung tumor prediction. The research provides strong support for the feasibility of blood-based screening for lung cancer, and the interdisciplinary method could potentially be adapted to other cancers beyond lung cancer.
