High-Throughput Alloy Development Using Advanced Characterization Techniques During Directed Energy Deposition Additive Manufacturing

Niklas Sommer et al.

Summary: In laser-based direct energy deposition (DED-LB) additive manufacturing, high-power laser beam is used to melt wire or powder materials. This process enables the fabrication of compositionally graded materials and high-throughput alloy development. However, substantial characterization efforts are needed to assess the phase and microstructural evolution. This study introduces the use of high-brilliance X-Ray analysis and micropillar compression testing to tackle these challenges and provides insights into the properties of a compositionally graded material made from AISI 316L stainless steel and CoCrMo alloy.

The strain rate sensitive flow stresses and constitutive equations of a selective-laser-melt and an annealed-rolled 316L stainless steel: A comparative study

Mustafa Guden et al.

Summary: The compressive flow stresses of Selective-Laser-Melt 316L (SLM-316L) alloy and commercial annealed-extruded 316L (C-316L) alloy were compared at different strain rates. Microstructural examinations revealed twinning-induced-plasticity in SLM-316L alloy and martensitic transformation-induced-plasticity in C-316L alloy. The rate sensitivity of SLM-316L was slightly higher than C-316L at low strain rates, but similar at high strain rates. The similar activation volumes suggested a similar thermally activated deformation process in both alloys.

Hot Isostatic Pressing for Fatigue Critical Additively Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

Terrence P. Moran et al.

Summary: This study investigates the efficacy of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) in enhancing the fatigue performance of additively manufactured (AM) Ti-6Al-4V. The limitations of HIP are explored by varying the initial material state through the selection of AM system, powder chemical composition, and process parameters. It is found that the fatigue performance of HIP'd AM Ti-6Al-4V depends on the as-built quality, and differences in common material attributes cannot fully explain the observed discrepancies in performance. Furthermore, exploring HIP parameters outside of ASTM recommendations shows that a reduced temperature and high-pressure treatment significantly improve fatigue performance.

Influence of the position and size of various deterministic defects on the high cycle fatigue resistance of a 316L steel manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

Olivier Andreau et al.

Summary: Optimized 316L steel samples manufactured using laser powder bed fusion were tested for high cycle fatigue at R = 0.1, showing outstanding fatigue properties. Additional fatigue tests on samples with deterministic defects of various sizes and positions revealed that the critical defect size is around 20 μm for surface defects and up to 380 μm for internal pores. Fracture surface analysis suggested that the large size discrepancy between surface and internal fatigue crack initiation could be attributed to the local gaseous environment in the pores.

Dynamic mechanical properties of 316L stainless steel fabricated by an additive manufacturing process

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The study utilized the cold metal transfer (CMT) process to fabricate 316L stainless steel and compared its dynamic characteristics with annealed wrought 316L, finding that CMT 316L exhibited higher yield strength and flow stress at small strains due to a special cellular structure in the matrix. The study also showed that the average twin thickness of CMT 316L decreased with the increase of strain rates during dynamic compressions.
