Optimization of olive leaves' thin layer, intermittent near-infrared-drying

Ioanna Pyrka et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of intermittent near-infrared radiation on the quality of dried olive leaves. The results showed that heating at high temperature for a short time resulted in better greenness, total phenol content, and antioxidant activity. Infrared-drying was faster and superior to oven-drying in terms of greenness and oleuropein level. The study highlights the importance of finding innovative and efficient drying techniques for producing high-quality olive leaves. Overall, it is rated 8 out of 10.

Quantitative Determination of the Main Phenolic Compounds, Antioxidant Activity, and Toxicity of Aqueous Extracts of Olive Leaves of Greek and Spanish Genotypes

Maria Esther Martinez-Navarro et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and toxicity of olive leaves from different genotypes of Spain and Greece. HPLC-DAD analysis, as well as DPPHGreek ano teleia, ABTSGreek ano teleia(+), Folin-Ciocalteu, and Microtox(R) methods were used. The results showed that 'Picual' had the highest oleuropein content, followed by wild olive leaves and 'Arbequina'. The antioxidant activity of 'Arbequina', 'Picual', and wild genotypes were the highest, and they also had the highest total phenol content. The aqueous leaf extracts of olive showed similar behavior to other herbal infusions in terms of their inhibitory effects on the bioluminescence of Aliivibrio fischeri, with EC50(15) ranging from 11.82 to 82.50 mg/mL.

Alternatives to antibiotics for organic poultry production: types, modes of action and impacts on bird's health and production

Mohamed E. Abd El-Hack et al.

Summary: The poultry industry plays a significant role in addressing the nutritional gap in many countries by providing protein-rich meat and eggs at a lower cost than other animal meat sources. Following the ban of antibiotic growth promoters, natural alternatives such as probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, essential oils, and other feed additives have gained popularity in the poultry industry for their unique properties and positive impact on poultry production. They can easily be mixed with other feed ingredients, improve feed intake and conversion rate, enhance bird immunity and digestion, reduce antibiotic usage, and provide healthy organic products for human consumption.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term effects of dried olive pulp on the production, fatty acid profile, and health parameters of laying hens. The results showed that feeding dried olive pulp increased the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in eggs, while decreasing the saturated fatty acid proportion. This had a positive impact on the health and lipid indices of the eggs, without adverse effects on bird performance and welfare. Feeding dried olive pulp at certain rates improved egg nutrition quality.
