Bridging the Terahertz Gap: Photonics-Assisted Free-Space Communications From the Submillimeter-Wave to the Mid-Infrared

Xiaodan Pang et al.

Summary: Since one and half centuries ago, radio and optics have been separate electromagnetic spectrum regions for data transmission, but now the boundaries between them are becoming blurred and intercrossed. Optical technologies are expanding into infrared regions, while radio technologies strive for higher frequencies to gain broader bandwidth. Technological breakthroughs in photonics-assisted free-space transmission have been witnessed in recent years.

Radiation pattern of planar optoelectronic antennas for broadband continuous- wave terahertz emission

Simon Nellen et al.

Summary: In future wireless communication networks at terahertz frequencies, the directivity and beam profile of emitters are crucial, as no additional beam forming optics can be used in free-space. Experimental and numerical investigations showed that the feeding point structure connecting the photodiode and antenna significantly influences the radiation pattern. By optimizing the feeding point, side lobes were reduced from -2 dB to -13 dB and the beam angle was narrowed at 300 GHz.
