Framework for multirisk climate scenarios across system receptors with application to the Metropolitan City of Venice

Beatrice Sambo et al.

Summary: Climate change affects the frequency of extreme events and requires systemic climate change adaptation. This paper introduces multirisk analysis to identify hotspot locations and prioritize affected system receptors. Using Venice as a case study, the analysis shows that increased risks are mainly driven by drought, pluvial flood, and storm surge, with vulnerable receptors concentrated in urban centers and coastal areas. Risk communication through multirisk maps is useful for stakeholders and public administration. The maps also recommend priorities for future investigation and risk management.

Prioritization of Resilience Initiatives for Climate-Related Disasters in the Metropolitan City of Venice

Marta Bonato et al.

Summary: The increasing magnitude and frequency of climate and disruptive factors are stressing coastal systems, exacerbated by various factors like land use transformations and urbanization. By applying a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), integrating qualitative and quantitative information, system resilience in facing climate-related threats can be enhanced. Different policy initiatives were considered to support critical functions identified by local stakeholders, with cognitive and informative initiatives proving to enhance resilience across most scenarios.

Sea-level rise in Venice: historic and future trends (review article)

Davide Zanchettin et al.

Summary: The city of Venice and its surrounding lagoonal ecosystem are highly vulnerable to variations in relative sea level, with historical evidence showing that subsidence has been a significant contributor to sea-level rise in Venice. Recent studies have found that after correcting for subsidence effects, the average rate of sea-level rise in Venice is 1.23 mm/year, with higher rates observed in more recent years.
