Phraseological complexity and low- and intermediate-level L2 learners' writing quality

Jingyang Jiang et al.

Summary: This study examines the role of phraseological complexity measures in predicting the writing quality of low- and intermediate-level second language learners, compared to more traditional syntactic and lexical complexity measures. The findings suggest that phraseological, syntactic, and lexical complexity measures each contribute to explaining the variance in writing scores. Phraseological complexity is found to be an independent dimension of L2 complexity.

Non-canonical word order as a measure of syntactic complexity in advanced L2 German

Mathieu Lecouvet

Summary: This study investigates the use of non-canonical structures as indicators of syntactic complexification in advanced L2 German writing and finds a significant increase in the frequency of argument inversions with higher proficiency levels.

Dependency distance measures in assessing L2 writing proficiency

Jinghui Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study combines traditional syntactic complexity measures with newly-proposed dependency distance measures to assess second language syntactic complexity development. The findings suggest that dependency distance measures outperform traditional measures in differentiating writing proficiency levels and can further explain the results of traditional measures from a language processing perspective.

Syntactic Complexity of Different Text Types: From the Perspective of Dependency Distance Both Linearly and Hierarchically

Ruina Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new measure of syntactic complexity, MHDD, and combines it with the established MDD to investigate syntactic complexity in different texts. Correlations between MHDD and MDD are identified, with possible reasons discussed from mathematical and theoretical perspectives.

Dependency distance minimization: a diachronic exploration of the effects of sentence length and dependency types

Xueying Liu et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the diachronic change of dependency distance in terms of dependency types and sentence length. The results show that sentence length has an effect on diachronic dependency distance minimization of dependency types, and anti-minimization does exist in short sentences over time. Importantly, not all dependency types exhibit a decreasing trend, as only nine types of dependency relations are responsible for the dependency distance minimization.
