Long-term musical training induces white matter plasticity in emotion and language networks

Li-Kai Cheng et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown that long-term musical training can impact brain functionality and alter brain structure. This study specifically focuses on vocalists and investigates the changes in neural network architecture after long-term musical training. The results reveal that both voice and piano training can enhance connectivity among emotion-related brain regions and reshape the architecture of experience-dependent networks involved in vocal motor control, sensory feedback, and language processing. These findings suggest that long-term musical training can strengthen or modify white matter connectivity networks in an experience-dependent manner.

Potential Benefits of Music Therapy on Stroke Rehabilitation

Chengyan Xu et al.

Summary: Stroke is a debilitating condition with high rates of disability and mortality, often resulting in dysphagia, aphasia, motor dysfunction, cognitive impairment, depression, and other complications for survivors. Music therapy, as an emerging method of poststroke rehabilitation, can improve the quality of life of stroke patients by attenuating symptoms and promoting neurological recovery.

Summary: This study is a review of the 5th edition of World Health Organization (WHO) Central Nervous System (CNS) tumours classification, providing general testing guidance for pathologists and clinicians in neuro-oncology. This integrated approach, including molecular biomarkers, is necessary for proper classification, risk stratification, and prognostic-predictive clinical purposes.

Neuroanatomical correlates of speech and singing production in chronic post-stroke aphasia

Noelia Martinez-Molina et al.

Summary: A classical observation in neurology is that stroke patients with impairments in speech production can still sing the same utterances. This study examined the relationship between lesion patterns and grey matter volume and production rate in speech and singing tasks. The findings suggest that singing has a distinctive neural architecture and may serve as a biomarker for predicting treatment response in speech rehabilitation.

Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on aphasia in stroke patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects and safety of rTMS on aphasia in stroke patients, finding that rTMS was more effective in language recovery compared to sham and conventional rehabilitation, especially low-frequency and bilateral rTMS. However, the quality of evidence for all outcomes was low, with potential publication bias.

Music Therapy for Children With Autistic Spectrum Disorder and/or Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Systematic Review

Hanna Mayer-Benarous et al.

Summary: The systematic review examined the impact of music therapy on children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders, showing that educational music therapy had positive effects on patients with ASD, especially in speech production, and that improvisational music therapy was beneficial for social functioning. More research is needed to explore the effects of educational music therapy on other NDDs such as dyslexia.

Effectiveness of Melodic Intonation Therapy in Chinese Mandarin on Non-fluent Aphasia in Patients After Stroke: A Randomized Control Trial

Xiao-Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT) has a positive impact on the speech function of patients with aphasia and strokes, with fixed-pitch melodies and phrases providing a key to open the language pathway. Compared to speech therapy, music therapy-based MIT shows more effectiveness in the recovery of language function in patients with non-fluent aphasia.

Effects of Low-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Language Recovery in Poststroke Survivors With Aphasia: An Updated Meta-analysis

Zhongqiu Hong et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis of 14 randomized controlled trials revealed that LF-rTMS has positive and significant effects on language function poststroke in both short-term (Hedges' g = 0.65; P < .05) and long-term (Hedges' g = 0.46; P < .05). LF-rTMS for 20 minutes per day over 10 days showed the largest effect size (Hedges' g = 1.02; P < .05), and significantly improved language performance in the chronic stage after stroke (Hedges' g = 0.55; P < .05).
