PtrVCS2 Regulates Drought Resistance by Changing Vessel Morphology and Stomatal Closure in Populus trichocarpa

Meng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a gene PtrVCS2 associated with drought resistance was identified in black cottonwood (P. trichocarpa). Overexpression of PtrVCS2 improved drought adaptability and resistance in P. trichocarpa by regulating multiple genes involved in stomatal movement and cell wall biosynthesis. These findings contribute to the development of drought-resistant tree species.

JMJ28 guides sequence-specific targeting of ATX1/2-containing COMPASS-like complex in Arabidopsis

Si-Si Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers report that JMJ28 protein in Arabidopsis plays a crucial role in the recruitment and targeting of ATX1/2-containing COMPASS-like complex by recognizing specific DNA motifs through a plant-specific WRC domain. They also found that JMJ28 associates with COMPASS-like complex via direct interaction with RBL and its DNA-binding activity is essential for the targeting specificity and deposition of H3K4me at specific loci. Additionally, JMJ28 is identified as a negative regulator of plant immunity.

Cell-type-specific PtrWOX4a and PtrVCS2 form a regulatory nexus with a histone modification system for stem cambium development in Populus trichocarpa

Xiufang Dai et al.

Summary: PtrWOX4a is a highly expressed stem vascular-cambium-specific gene in Populus, whose expression is regulated by PtrVCS2 gene encoding a zinc finger protein. PtrVCS2 binds to the PtrWOX4a promoter as part of a PtrWOX13a-PtrVCS2-PtrGCN5-1-PtrADA2b-3 protein tetramer. PtrVCS2 prevents the interaction between PtrGCN5-1 and PtrADA2b-3, leading to hypoacetylation of H3K9, H3K14 and H3K27 at the PtrWOX4a promoter and fewer cambium cell layers.

Regulation of cytokinin biosynthesis using PtRD26(pro)-IPT module improves drought tolerance through PtARR10-PtYUC4/5-mediated reactive oxygen species removal in Populus

Hou-Ling Wang et al.

Summary: Drought is a major environmental factor that limits plant growth and survival. Genetic engineering has been used to enhance plant drought tolerance. In this study, transgenic poplar lines expressing the isopentenyl transferase gene (IPT) under the control of the senescence and drought-inducible PtRD26 promoter (PtRD26(pro)-IPT) showed improved growth and drought tolerance. The activation of auxin biosynthesis pathway and the regulation of cytokinin pathway were found to be involved in the improved drought tolerance of the transgenic plants. The findings of this study provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction between cytokinin and auxin in response to environmental stresses, and suggest a potential approach for improving drought tolerance in trees through molecular breeding.

Dimerization of PtrMYB074 and PtrWRKY19 mediates transcriptional activation of PtrbHLH186 for secondary xylem development in Populus trichocarpa

Huizi Liu et al.

Summary: Wood formation is regulated by transcriptional regulatory networks, and this study identified a new interaction between PtrMYB074 and PtrWRKY19 in Populus trichocarpa. The study also revealed the involvement of PtrbHLH186 as a direct target gene of the PtrMYB074-PtrWRKY19 complex. Overexpression of PtrbHLH186 resulted in altered plant growth and wood properties. Understanding this regulatory pathway may aid in optimizing wood formation and growth.

Tropical tree mortality has increased with rising atmospheric water stress

David Bauman et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that tree mortality is increasing in certain tropical regions, which could have significant impacts on the carbon sink and carbon budget. The mechanisms and species vulnerability behind these mortality changes are still unclear. A 49-year study of old-growth forest plots in the Australian moist tropics revealed that annual tree mortality risk doubled on average over the last 35 years, potentially reducing life expectancy and carbon residence time. Losses in biomass were not counteracted by growth and recruitment. Higher mortality risk was observed in less moist local climates, but local mean climate did not predict the rate of temporal increase in mortality risk. Species exhibited different trajectories in their mortality risk, and the highest average risk was found in species closer to the upper end of the atmospheric vapor pressure deficit niches. The long-term increase in vapor pressure deficit suggested that atmospheric water stress, driven by global warming, may be a primary cause of increasing tree mortality in moist tropical forests.

William R. L. Anderegg et al.

Summary: Forests on Earth are crucial for mitigating climate change and supporting biodiversity, but they are also at risk from climate change. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of climate risks for forests worldwide, using multiple approaches to model carbon, biodiversity, and disturbance risks. The findings highlight higher risks for certain forests, including southern boreal forests and those in western North America and parts of the Amazon.
