Students' Perspectives on Basic and Clinical Science Integration When Step 1 is Administered After the Core Clerkships

Jacquelyn B. Kercheval et al.

Summary: There are various barriers to the cognitive integration of basic and clinical science in a post-clerkship Step 1 curriculum. The explicit relevance of basic science to patient care needs to be demonstrated to students through modeling by clinician educators to enhance the potential benefits of curricular change.

Connecting Biochemistry Knowledge to Patient Care in the Clinical Workplace: Senior Medical Students' Perceptions about Facilitators and Barriers

Tracy B. Fulton et al.

Summary: This study investigates the experiences of senior medical students in using biochemistry knowledge during workplace learning and examines the influence of interactions with people and the clinical learning environment on these experiences. The findings reveal that students infrequently used or connected to biochemistry knowledge in patient care activities, but recognized the value of such connections to learning. Barriers and facilitators to making connections were identified, including the behaviors and knowledge of supervisors and the patients seen in clerkships.

Junior doctors' experiences with interprofessional collaboration: Wandering the landscape

Titia S. van Duin et al.

Summary: In the transition from medical student to junior doctor, it is important for junior doctors to become part of the physician community of practice and shape their professional identity. However, they struggle to bridge the gap with the interprofessional team, preventing interprofessional learning from becoming an integrative process. This professional isolation hinders their understanding of roles and expectations of others.

Applying Landscapes of Practice Principles to the Design of Interprofessional Education

Jascha de Nooijer et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the importance of grounding interprofessional education in learning theory, with a focus on the concepts of knowledgeability and identification from the landscapes of practice framework. By utilizing modes of identification such as engagement, imagination, and alignment in IPE-design, students can develop skills for interprofessional collaboration and a deep understanding of their roles in practice. Ultimately, this approach prepares students for successful collaboration in healthcare settings.

Strategies From 11 US Medical Schools for Integrating Basic Science Into Core Clerkships

Michelle Daniel et al.

Summary: Calls for curricular reform in medical schools to better integrate basic and clinical science have led to a shift towards enhancing the clinical relevance of foundational science instruction and providing early exposure to the clinical environment. However, challenges such as the nature of clinical practice, time constraints, and limited faculty knowledge have hindered the full realization of these reforms. Despite efforts to integrate basic science into clerkships, more support and resources are needed to overcome barriers and fully incorporate basic science education into clinical training.

The wolf you feed: Challenging intraprofessional workplace-based education norms

Renee E. Stalmeijer et al.

Summary: The trajectory towards becoming a medical professional is largely determined by the clinical workplace, where medical trainees learn to address complex health care issues through interprofessional collaboration. Current reliance on socio-cultural learning theories in medical education has limitations and should focus more on interprofessional learning dynamics.
