By a whisker: the sensory role of vibrissae in hovering flight in nectarivorous bats

Eran Amichai et al.

Summary: Whiskers are important tactile structures used by mammals for sensory functions, but it is not known how bats use them. This study found that nectar-eating bats have longer vibrissae than non-nectarivorous bats, and removing the vibrissae altered their flight trajectory, suggesting that the vibrissae may assist in fine flight control. This provides evidence of an additional sensory tool in bats' diverse toolkit.

What can whiskers tell us about mammalian evolution, behaviour, and ecology?

Robyn A. Grant et al.

Summary: Most of our knowledge about whiskers comes from a few species like laboratory rats and mice, but there are marked differences in whisker arrangements, lengths, and functions across different mammalian species. Developing a deeper understanding of whiskers and their role in mammalian behavior and ecology is crucial for conservation efforts.

Visual cues enhance obstacle avoidance in echolocating bats

Te K. Jones et al.

Summary: This study investigates how the combination of visual and auditory cues influences the obstacle avoidance behaviors of insectivorous big brown bats. The results show that when both visual and auditory cues are present, bats have a heightened avoidance response to obstacles. Flight and echolocation behaviors do not significantly vary under different obstacle conditions, indicating that these factors do not determine a bat's response to obstacle stimulus type.

Mechanosensory Hairs and Hair-like Structures in the Animal Kingdom: Specializations and Shared Functions Serve to Inspire Technology Applications

Brittney L. Boublil et al.

Summary: Biological hair and hair-like sensors are diverse across the animal kingdom and play important roles in animal behaviors, supporting survival in various ecological niches. The shared functional properties of hair and hair-like structures among invertebrates and vertebrates can inspire advancements in artificial systems, such as robotics, by highlighting biological sensors.

Echolocating bats rely on an innate speed-of-sound reference

Eran Amichai et al.

Summary: Animals must encode fundamental physical relationships in their brains, with echolocating bats naturally encoding the speed of sound rather than translating time into distance. The study results shed light on the evolution of innate and flexible sensory perception.
