Self-Accommodation Induced Electronic Metal-Support Interaction on Ruthenium Site for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Changqing Li et al.

Summary: Tuning the metal-support interaction of supported metal catalysts is an effective approach to improve catalytic performance. By self-accommodating into Fe3O4 and carbon support through electronic metal-support interaction, ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles exhibit robust catalytic activity towards the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Spectroscopic evidence and theoretical calculations reveal that electronic perturbation occurs in the Ru-Fe3O4/C system, influencing adsorption behavior and enabling more electrons to flow to H intermediates (H*) for favorable adsorption. The weak binding strength of the Ru-O bond also facilitates the recombination of H* species into H-2 molecules, resulting in better HER activity and stability compared to commercial Pt/C benchmark in alkaline media.

Band Gap Narrowing in a High-Entropy Spinel Oxide Semiconductor for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Rowan R. Katzbaer et al.

Summary: High-entropy oxides (HEOs) with randomly mixed metal cations in a crystalline oxide lattice exhibit unique properties, including band gap narrowing in a high-entropy aluminate spinel oxide. The band gap narrowing arises from the broadening of the energy distribution of the 3d states due to variations in electronegativities and crystal field splitting. As a catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, high-entropy oxide A5Al2O4 outperforms single-metal end members but suffers from catalyst deactivation due to the formation of a passivating layer.

Navigating surface reconstruction of spinel oxides for electrochemical water oxidation

Yuanmiao Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the relationship between surface reconstruction of spinel electrocatalysts and metal-oxygen covalency polarity was investigated. It was found that a stronger metal-oxygen covalency contributes to a more thorough surface reconstruction towards oxyhydroxides. The researchers also developed a criterion to evaluate the reconstruction degree and provide guidelines for cation selection in spinel pre-catalyst design.

An Efficient Turing-Type Ag2Se-CoSe2 Multi-Interfacial Oxygen-Evolving Electrocatalyst**

Xiao-Long Zhang et al.

Summary: A simple cation exchange approach was used to produce Turing-type Ag2Se on CoSe2 nanobelts, resulting in a material highly effective in catalyzing the oxygen evolution reaction. The intrinsic OER activity correlates linearly with the length of Ag2Se-CoSe2 interfaces, indicating that these Turing-type interfaces are the active sites for OER. The excellent OER performance is attributed to the optimized adsorption energies for critical oxygen-containing intermediates at the unconventional interfaces, as shown by X-ray absorption and computational simulations.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the Au-TiO2 SMSI of Au/TiO2 catalysts is sensitive to both the size of Au nanoparticles and the facets of TiO2. By forming TiO2-x overlayers on Au NPs, easier lattice oxygen activation and higher catalytic activity can be achieved, leading to enhanced low-temperature CO oxidation efficiency.
